could come in for a few hours and get two new associates caught up on a case I'd begun and that was now getting some traction. So I says fine, and I show up, and as I lit a cigarette the associates started to stop me, but I just said, "You wanna hear this or not?" So they slid me a mug with the ABA logo on it, and then I had a summer associate run down to the store to fetch me a six-pack, since on my unemployed days I drink. Nothing too snooty, now. So sitting there across from the two new associates, I drank and cut up the empty cans and mused about the nature of law, the futility of lawyering, the dream about being a person. "You ever hear of the m-brane theory, associates?"

"In this world, the world of the billable hour, we process time linearly, discretely. But outside of our spacetime, from what would be a fourth dimensional perspective, time wouldn't exist, and from that vantage, could we attain it, we see that our spacetime is flattened. Death created time to grow the things that we would bill. But it all repeats, associates. How many times have we had this conversation? And that email you sent this morning, the one you forgot to put the attachment on, you're going be sending that again and again and again. This is what I mean when I'm talkin about time, and death, and futility. There are broader ideas at work, mainly what is owed between us as a 'profession' for our mutual illusions. Fourteen straight hours of staring at commas, these are the things you think of. You ever done that? You look in their dark little circles, just like time, both flat *and* round. Those dark little circles are what you see when you last look into the eyes of someone who's just been shitcanned. Ever do that, look in the eyes of a friend just after they got the news? You know what you see? They welcome it... not at first, but... right there in the last instant, as they pick up their bag and close their office door. It's an unmistakable relief. See cause they were afraid, and now they saw for the very first time how easy it was to just... let go. They saw, in that last nanosecond, they saw... what they were. You, yourself, this whole big drama, it was never more than a jerry-rig of presumption and striving, and you could just let go. To finally know that you didn't have to hold on so tight. To realize that all you did all day, all your loves, all your hates, all your dreams of escape, it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room, a dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it. I can't say the job made me this way. More like me being this way made me right for the job. I used to think about it more, but you reach a certain age, and you know who you are. Now I live in a little studio, get disgusted by shrews and libs on the internet, work doc review four days a week, and in between I drink. And there ain't nobody there to stop me. I know who I am. And after all these years, there's a victory in that."

180.
Not sure everyone is getting the reference though but that makes it even more 180.
