Earlier this year, I had a close relative pass away extremely quickly and unexpectedly. (She was 54.)

Apparently, she made out like a bandit in her recent divorce. (Her ex-husband left her for a younger woman; he initiated the divorce; and—I suppose out of guilt—was rather generous in the division of their marital assets.)

Because my deceased relative had no heirs of her own—paired with her substantial net worth at her passing—she left a substantial sum of money to my siblings and me.

I just recently received disbursements from the estate's trusts, and I've been researching how best to invest this unexpected windfall prudently.

I've been doing a bunch of research into a bunch of Vanguard funds and ETFs, but I'd like to hear what finance / investing / Vanguard MFEs recommend.

TL;DR:

Recently inherited a significant amount of money from a relative and I'm seeking advice from finance and Vanguard MFEs on how best invest these funds.

Approx 500k, not including BIGLAW savings.

My current plan is to reassess whether to jump in after the Fed raises rates in December, so I'm not in any rush, but I'd like to get a better understanding of how to act when the right time comes.

The easiest thing is just to pick a few broad Vanguard funds ... if this is truly long-term savings that you won't need to touch for years, you could also start laddering into muni bonds of say 3-5 year maturities (individual bonds, not funds) to cop dem TAX-EXEMPT returns and hold them to maturity

Ideally, I wouldn't touch it for a long time, but I'm still inclined to diversify between equities and bonds.

Just recently got married, looking for a new job in a different jurisdiction (where my wife is from), forming babby can't be too far off, getting close to biglaw showing me the door, would need to buy a house/car if/when we move.

So there's definitely a solid chunk that I'd have no issue being unable to touch for a long time, but given all the uncertainties in the short-to-medium term (unemployment, moving, buying a house, creating human life/lives), I'd prefer to have the option to help, e.g., with a downpayment.

In the meantime, I've moved the FDIC-insured max into a high-yield savings account, and just looking for any insight on xo-approved funds and a prudent diversification between equities and bonds.

Also, I'm a Vanguard noob, so I'd love some insight on choosing between Admiral funds, Investor funds, and ETFs.

Is the only difference between Admiral/Investor the expense ratio and the minimum investment amount?

I know stock picking is mostly flame, but I follow DrakeMallard, acr, and refunk's financial markets poasting pretty closely. Given their amount of insightful analysis (plus also the O&G bros), I've allocated a chunk of cash to play around with.

Summoning DrakeMallard—

Is there any way a regular biglaw dude could get in on shorting the fuck out of upcoming tech IPOs (i.e., Square)?

Dollar cost average into vanguard total market, total international market, and total bond in a proportion that fits your risk preferences. Throw in total REIT if you have tax advantaged accounts like IRAs

This poaster is in biglaw and doesn't know about etfs and mutual funds. Are they going to do the basic research now that they got this $? I agree with you that diy is preferable.

I'm pretty much just waiting to get the talk from BIGLAW, my billables basically just scream "please shitcan me."

So DIY and the associated research doesn't deter me. I pretty much spend most of my days at the office researching investment strategies as of late.

Fund / allocation target / current allocation / rebalance amount

For that he can save like 10 basis points

I try to keep things as simple as possible. It's not like you aren't getting growth exposure in VTSAX and VTIAX
