There is government subsidization of flights to small, remote-ish towns like those that scatter the west.

And it's by "Great Lakes Air" who flies to CA, CO, AZ and Minneapolis (as close as it gets to a Great Lake)

ljl at this garbage

"According to a 2006 New York Times article on the program, the subsidy per passenger, averaged across the entire program excluding Alaska, is approximately $74, and much higher on some particularly poorly-patronized flights.[9] Subsidies are as high as $801 per passenger.[10]

Patronage on many flights is very low. The majority of EAS planes have fewer than 20 seats, and flights typically are less than half full.[11] However, the program is politically popular in the cities receiving the subsidized flights, many of which use an airport with scheduled service as a selling point to attract industry to their regions."

a lot of international routes are also subsidized by local/state governments.

These examples are nothing like the podunk-town subsidies paid by the federal government.

PDX subsidized Delta to keep a Tokyo route during a downturn and to avoid the more costly option of losing the route.

Sonoma (a popular wine tourism destination) subsidized the upfront costs of service from a small airline, which is now successful in the region.

The Last One i did not read because ADD.

I think that the fed program I linked is bullshit because of examples like these.
