so i know a lot of you have 172+, and a lot also went to yale/harvard/etc. so how common is it to score in the 99 percentile in both the SAT/LSAT? and does it mean that you're a genius?

where does genius IQ supposedly start? 130? Is that 3 standard deviations above the mean? I think 99th percentile is not very many standard deviations above the mean, but I've never scored low enough on a standardized test to wonder how many above a 99th percentile score is. Something like that, plus the extent to which you think SAT/LSAT correlates with IQ and the extent to which you think IQ measures genius at all accurately should help.
http://www.robertniles.com/stats/stdev.shtml - first link that came up on a search, suggests 3 ~ 99th percentile, so maybe you are a genius.

Um... 130 seems a little low for genius.
I've heard 160 for genius.

What was his IQ?
I think we can agree that Einstein would qualify. What seems far less likely is that one out of very 100 people who take the SAT should qualify, since this would indicate thousands of newly identified "geniuses" every year. At that point, the word no longer means much.

3 SD above is 145 or 148 depending on the scale.

The 99th percentile SAT score is only 1490 on the old scale.

It's probably somewhat harder to score in the 99th percentile on the LSAT, FWIW.

What is a 166 now? Which percentile is that?

when i took the SAT way back when you needed a 760/760 to score in the 99percentile which is a 1520. i'm pretty sure it fluctuates year by year.
but actually im more concerned with how common the 99/99 is, moreso than if you're a genius or not. i kinda was just wanting to see if the people who scored 99/99 thought of themselves as very very smart. :)

I think if you score above the 99th percentile on both tests, you're probably pretty smart in (at least) certain areas, though probably not in all.
Just don't get your head swelled!

FWIW, a 99th percentile SAT score supposedly puts you in the 99.7th percentile overall in terms of IQ. (Not everyone takes the SAT.)
Still, without an official definition of genius, I don't think you can conclude anything. To me a genius is more like a 1 in 10,000 thing, or maybe one in 100,000.

Well, if you think about all the douches at T14's that crack 170, I think we can agree that doing that well doesn't make you a true "genius".
I'm not even sure everyone who gets over 177 is a genius, but that at least seems a little more arguable.

Mensa website shows the difference in scores for different IQ tests for the magic 2% mark that they let in. Expect that the IQ number for "genius" varies quite a bit, depending on the exam.

PSA: Mensa people aren't "geniuses" either -- they're simply supposedly of "high IQ".
You can get into Mensa with a 163, I believe.

I have a 99/99...and no, I don't consider myself a genius at all.
Usually I just think that other people are stupid.
