The gunman walked up to us and said "here's a message from Makavelli!" and then opened fire. I remember getting hit in the shoulder and how it was the worst pain I ever experienced - my next memory is waking up in the hospital.

I was fine: my metal Power Rangers lunchbox had stopped most of the bullets. But my friend didn't make it: he died right there on the playground before the ambulance could even arrive. They never caught the gunman, but I suspect it was E.D.I. Mean.

Back then, we took hip-hop seriously. We weren't just fans: we were PASSIONATE and willing to die for the music we listened to. Kids these days just don't understand it, but I don't blame them. It's the artists that have declined. Nobody would be willing to take a bullet for Drake the way I took a bullet for Biggie.

As for Jimmy Gallagher, he continued to be a kiss-ass who sucked up to any adult in a position of authority he could find. But I got my revenge. In 7th grade, when Jimmy ran for student government Vice President, I filed to run against him. I won a crushing 10-vote victory, and was elected President the next year. I went on to serve in student government in high school and college too, while Jimmy never served in a student government position again.
