A former Hingham man who masqueraded as a 16-year-old nymphet in an Internet chat room and then blackmailed suitors who took the bait pleaded guilty to extortion Tuesday in an Illinois federal court.

Brett Wohl, 25, who seduced the on-line libertines from his clerk's computer at a Chicago law firm, faces eight to 14 months in prison. Free on bond, he is scheduled to be sentenced in January.

Wohl declined comment yesterday on the advice of his attorney, but said, "I am in fact guilty of what they charged me with. It's certainly not something I'm proud of

Brett T. Wohl, 25, a former Chicago resident, admitted on Tuesday that he had threatened to expose the e-mails to the victim's co-workers unless he wired money. Wohl was arrested in May after extorting a total of $5,000 from the victim, who then investigated the messages and discovered they came from a Chicago law firm where Wohl worked as a clerk. Wohl, who is free on bond, is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 15 in federal court in Chicago.

Federal investigators say a Chicago man surfed Internet chat rooms pretending to be gay, then threatened to expose a man's sexual orientation to his wife and family unless he was paid $5,000.

Brett T. Wohl of Chicago was charged with extortion in a federal criminal complaint filed Thursday, and federal authorities say it isn't his first brush with the law.

In October 2002, Wohl pleaded guilty to one felony count of extortion.
