1. The fact that there are some weird state schools really drags down its prestige

It was more like, a whole bunch of people wanted to go to Cornell, some got in, while the rest settled for Binghamton, Geneseo, BU, etc. |

No argument with the subthread above. The Cornell student body is comprised solely of people who were rejected by another Ivy.
Brown on the other hand is irrationally appealing to liberal 18-year-olds from prep schools. I can make up my own major! I can pretend that Providence is a cool city! I will still have Ivy League resume if I want to apply for banking! Hermione!
And Dartmouth is a paradise for semi-smart people whose main interests are frats, drinking, trees, sports, date rape, and bros hooking you up with jobs. People like this would rather go to Dartmouth than Columbia, Brown or a top LAC. Harvard and Princeton can accommodate this kind of person, but there are only so many slots and there are a lot of students who are slightly less smart or slightly less good at lax. |
