that car chase scene in vegas followed by the total wrecking of the casino was just stimulation overload. you can overdo action to the point where it gets boring. the one where he's driving the beat up mini through Paris in Identity was way more gripping.

nothing was at stake. there are two major deaths shown but they are both kinda meaningless to the viewer because we were never close to those characters the way we were with Marie or Conklin or Abbot.

zero character development

we don't really learn much about bourne and even when we do get tidbits of his family history none of it makes any sense

relatedly, no development of relationships -- bourne spends a substantial amount of time with nikki parsons but there's no indication why he/we should care about her

so in the end it's just a guy running around for reasons that we don't understand in a bunch of boring action scenes

nikki's been in every movie and was bourne's one ally throughout. she helped him out in supremacy and there was always romantic tension between them. her death was kinda important i think but u had to have the previous movies fresh in mind

we know that parsons and bourne used to be in a relationship but we never actually saw any of it. the writers thought they could just bring her in and do no character development because she's been in a bunch of movies but no, we actually don't care about her at all because she was never an important character. you have to actually develop their relationship if she's going be his partner.

can you tell me anything about bourne and parson's relationship besides the fact that they were boyfriend and girlfriend before treadstone and she was brought in to help? a fact that we learned 2-3 films ago.

IMO, the entire silicon valley thing should've been scrapped and they should've focused 100% on bourne and his past relationships. only then would we be emotionally invested enough to really want to see bourne save X and kill Y and chase Z.

idk i don't think that's important she helped him out and fled from the gubmint. i cared about her as a character, she was sympathetic in her dilemma between professional duties and her feelings for bourne. thought letting the subtext between them hang there was a good idea.

i didn't give a shit about the silicon valley stuff with the tech entrepreneur but i guess they had to find some way to make the movie politically current. the stakes weren't high with the asset with the vendetta bourne was up against either.

overall though i thought it was decent. definitely better than bourne legacy with mushy face jeremy renner who doesn't fuck rachel weisz even though he's a wisecracking normie and not a tortured amnesiac anti-hero

i always thought that nikki was an exceedingly weak character even in the prior movies

i couldn't even describe nikki's personality to you even after she appeared in this movie and all the prior ones -- no adjectives come to mind

i really feel like the characters ought to be vivid/memorable. ultimatum wasn't great but at least u had the bumbling NSA director contrasted with a very competent landy. by that measure the best was still the first one bc you had bourne, who was basically a killing machine who always had it "together", contrasted against marie, who was this sort of disorganized/bohemian

Identity is just awesome in every way, but i also thought Supremacy was extremely coherent and strong. revenge. atonement. great soundtrack. Ward Abbott as the GOAT villain of the entire franchise.

yeah, supremacy was great

bourne running on the beach in the opening montage (and the accompanying acoustic guitar-driven goa soundtrack) is my favorite scene out of entire series

yeah, that's Legacy. the one i'm saying is better than the latest one with Matt Damon.

Renner doesn't play Bourne, but it's a related story. Renner's character is a second generation supersoldier. it's all based on the original treadstone project with Bourne. turns out they didn't stop trying.

yeah, that's actually a pretty clever safeguard. if your agents ever go rogue (like Bourne), you just take away the vitamins and they turn into tards. it's a solid story. everyone's doing everything for a reason. good rapport between the two main characters. it's not a great film, but it's more coherent than Jason Bourne. it's not trying to be hip by having Bourne run through a Greek riot to make sure the audience knows that it's 2014-2015.
