The fatal stabbing of 28-year-old Hugo Castillo, who died after being attacked at Echo Park Lake in July, has left a big void in the lives of his family and friends, reports the L.A. Times. His girlfriend, Yvonne Rosaz, is now left to care for Castillo’s two young sons. Says the L.A. Times:
“Now, Rosaz not only has lost her partner, but also the primary caregiver for her sons, ages 3 and 5. Castillo prepared family meals, always trying to make healthful food. He did the laundry and kept the house clean, Rosaz said.
Her sons are taking the loss hard. Evan, the oldest, has begun having tantrums. Lately, Erik has been listless. Rosaz herself can’t sleep. She has dreams in which Castillo is alive, and she wakes to the reality that he is gone.”
Castillo, a resident of South Los Angeles, was hanging out with friends near the public restrooms on the north side of Echo Park Lake when he was fatally stabbed by a man. The suspect, who is believed to be homeless, may have been angry over the mistaken belief that Castillo and friends were making fun of him, police said.

ECHO PARK — A memorial was held for 11-year-old Yonatan Daniel Aguilar on Wednesday night as officials revealed that the boy weighed only 34 pounds when he was found dead in a closet last month.
A computer program used by the county’s Department of Children and Family Services had indicated several times that there was a high risk of abuse against Yonatan, according to social service and police records obtained by the L.A. Times. But social workers determined that “the allegations of physical abuse were inconclusive,” said the Times.
The boy’s mother, Veronica Aguilar has pleaded not guilty to murder and child abuse charges.

Tomas Brewer, 26 and an avid cyclist, was riding his bicycle through his Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park on Saturday just after 6 p.m. when he was struck and killed by truck driven by a 22-year-old man named Cruz Tzoca, who now is being held on $130,000 bail on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said Tzoca was observed by an officer of the Rampart Division driving about 60 mph on the city streets. Other media reports have pegged Tzoca’s blood-alcohol level at twice the legal limit.
“I can’t put my hands around it,” said Chip Brewer, a retired carpenter and best known hereabouts as the inventor and founder of the Gloucester Soap Co. “At least I can function now. The first couple of days, I was in shock.”
Tomas would have been 27 next month. He first moved to Los Angeles in 2013, not long after graduating from Emerson College in Boston with a major in screenwriting. He wanted to write movies and followed the well-trod path to LA.
“He was a writer,” Chip Brewer said. “He was really creative and wrote a lot of different kinds of things. He was also a cartoonist.”
