Charging $7 now to weed out casual swipers. Could be useful to have a new app marketed like this, might draw in actual good people... or maybe draw the dregs from tinder et al who are sick of not finding anyone willing to commit? But that this app is changing focus, maybe it means people really are getting sick of hookup culture and tinder. Maybe there's hope for humanity yet.

Anyway I'm intrigued. Match exists but I don't think millennials even know it exists; hinge might do better since it's mobile. Yeah yeah global capitalism but in their FAQ they even say:

"We believe people are good; but dating apps have brought out the worst in us. We ghost, we flake, we say things we would never say in person, we judge, we objectify, and we simply lack the empathy that comes naturally in real life. The way dating apps are currently built encourages us to treat each other like objects - not people. And after some soul searching, we decided this just isn't what we set out to build.

We were totally guilty of the mindless swiping, and feeding into the hookup culture that has become the online dating scene. You deserve a product that values you as a person and provides you with like minded potentials that meet YOUR standards.

The struggle is real...but it shouldn’t be. That’s why we created a product that shifts away from the culture of swiping and casual hookups. We sifted & sorted through the data, listened to your thoughts & experiences, and built an alternative to the games, for people who are looking for meaningful connections."

Read the FAQ man

Wait, so what’s going to be different about new Hinge?

So, this is not Hinge simply adding a new feature or two. This is a completely new app: new concept, new layout, new look, and even a new code base (which, in laymen’s terms, means: the very skeleton of this app is different from the old one.)

We scrapped our old app because we realized the world of mindless swiping was ruining romance. Our new app was designed specifically for relationship-seekers after months of extensive research. A few key differences will be:

No Swiping

A new UI developed to foster conversations, not games

Every Like is Unique

Rather sending a generic ‘heart’, you can like or comment on the part of their profile that stands out most to you - and in turn, you can learn what stands out most about you!

Stories, Not Resumes

With beautifully redesigned rich profiles, new Hinge allows you to tell your story, rather than listing off your resume.

3x the Conversations

Make the conversation interesting right off the bat - comment on someone’s story card or picture rather than sending yet another “Hey, how’s it going?”.

People Who Want What You Want:

We cut the creeps, the clutter, and the flakes.

Personal Service:

Personal Service: We’re here to help! Our member services team is here to make sure you have an amazing experience.

We can’t wait to show you what’s in store!

lol if "likes" will be people identifying which part of your profile stands out, tindermos will just open a hinge account with their tinder profile and use it to mine data about how to improve their tinder profile to get more sloots

hinge was great for a while but sometime around a year ago after an update it seemed to suck, lots of glitches, few matches...seems like the current iteration was dead. I was curious and found tons of people posted reviews/comments online saying the same thing.

This reveal makes sense, figured they were retooling it or abandoning it..

OKCupid is all the actual online dating/non-hookup world needs. Millenials are still into it. If the pickings are slim on their it's because nobody else wants to actually do 'dating'

I know a number of people who met their spouses through Christian or Jewish religious dating apps but tinder and the like seem to attract mostly hookups or people who may want to meet people but really aren't seriously in the marriage market. I would love to see some graph comparing overall conversion rates from sign up to marriage across all these sites. It seems if the site isn't specifically marketing marriage as the end goal then it's likely to attract more of the hookup culture.
