I know a few very talented writers with exceptional credentials (elite schools; great grades) in NYC who had to do unpaid internships for years before they even got a paying gig with health insurance. In my interaction with them, the funniest thing about these types is the way they marvel at the relatively modest pay of those who leave the industry for PR work, advertising, teaching etc. In one conversation the guy told me "she makes $75k as a librarian AND they give her free health insurance!"
