one of the scandalous acts of violence that led to the tepid military crackdown this year was a massacre of cellphone tower workers who had been mistaken for a rival gang. this was seen as very poor form, since people down there are constantly using their phones for photos/videos/internet, and reliable service is taken as something approaching a civil right. along with decent roads.
honduras is somewhat poorer and shabbier and looks more like you'd expect from a country with its level of violence. but el salvador doesn't have the scruffy worn-out look of a society being seizured by crime. a lot of shit looks new. one of the local supermarket chains licensed a bryan adams song for its TV ad campaign, etc. |

I can't find it anymore but I used to have a picture of hurricane mitch as my desktop background that was the POTUS of a perfectly formed monster (still some impressive images out there but I can't find the shot I had where it basically engulfed the entire caribbean sea). It weaked a bit by the time it made landfall but I think it dropped some utterly absurd rainfall totals, like > 5 feet in certain areas.
