http://www.bcgsearch.com/article/900044811/The-1-Attorney-Career-Killer-that-Attorneys-Are-Never-Taught/
Law firms and the partners in them desperately want to keep people around who are committed and willing to work hard. Your commitment matters. Anything that shows a lack of commitment is discarded like a virus in the most competitive firms.
I receive phone calls from attorneys daily who have had a good run. They may have made $250,000 in a large firm by the time they were five years out of law school and then thought it was OK to leave the practice of law for several months to a year and do something else.
One woman from a large Chicago firm who went to the University of Pennsylvania for law school became a contractor.
Another guy who practiced securities law at a huge firm decided to write a book about his life.
Another person from a massive firm in Los Angeles worked in legal aid in the rural South.
One woman who graduated from Berkeley and practiced with a huge Palo Alto firm started a soap company.
Another guy worked at Fried Frank after graduating from Harvard Law School and then went to work in his dad's business for a few years.
Another woman started a clothing line in New York after finishing in the top of her law school class at NYU and working at a huge Wall Street law firm.
One guy thought he was really smart because he went to Yale Law School and wanted to come back to a law firm after teaching for a few years.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Game over. Good bye. HAVE A NICE LIFE!
These people NEVER, NEVER, NEVER are likely to be hired by a large law firm ever again. No matter how well it is spun. It does not, will not, and cannot possibly work. This advice is critical information for attorneys. NEVER leave your position. You’ll look like a slacker.
It’s not because the above attorneys are not brilliant and interesting. It is simply because they were not 115% committed to working in a large law firm and practicing law.
I often hear this line from attorneys that leave a big law firm: "I looked at the lives the partners were leading and did not want to be like them. That is why I left."
GREAT DECISION! Now you are living in a small apartment, do not make enough money to support a family and do not have a job. Meanwhile … that partner you did not want to be like is doing important work, has a job and is providing for her family and at least working and contributing to society. You stuck by that decision and how brilliant and smart it was!

This sounds like tech startup bullshit, even down to the "important work" flame.
> Meanwhile … that partner you did not want to be like is doing important work, has a job and is providing for her family and at least working and contributing to society
Hahahaha. Everything he says about Corporates (in law, tech, or banking) is true. You can't get back in if you've taken a break. However, the contribution to society is negative, and the kids of Corporates, although admitted to the best schools and jobs because of who their daddies are, turn into spoiled ingrate bastards.

It is at higher levels.
It's really easy to get a throwaway job that still pays better than any other shitty office job. Boot camp grads can pull that off.
If you want to be serious in tech, though, you gotta start climbing the ladder early because ageism starts at 30.

When an attorney starts work, they are surrounded by enormously competitive people inside a law firm. All sorts of games are occurring where people are psyching one another out, such as people in the firm starting rumors and much more.
Everyone is trying to break your sense of commitment, but your job is to stay focused and committed.
Most people give up. I see people give up all the time.
People give up practicing law.
They give up trying to be a musician.
They give up trying to be an actor.
They give up trying to be a writer.
They give up on their dreams and what they were meant to do.

This guy is a good fiction writer.
Also, he's a recruiter - how stupid is it for him to look down on working at legal aid or running your own soap business?

also I love how the recruiter for biglaw is a sociopath; a sociopath recruiting sociopaths to work for other sociopaths!

Top comment:
I don't know how much of this is accurate. I left the practice of law over 20 years ago. I was working in a large firm doing interesting work. However, much of the work I was doing had artificial self-imposed deadlines that required the long-hours, weekends and holiday grinds to get done. There wasn't a pressing a need for a brief to be filed or anything else like that. I don't think anything more than billing was really at the heart of the pace at which we were asked to work.
I left that world to go into business and acquire the work/life balance I sought as a new dad. I didn't want to miss my kids growing up and I don't regret having made the change. I knew it was a choice that would impact my earnings but I wasn't going to be an absent father. I also wasn't going to give my employer less than what they expected.
When I come home from work now - there is no more "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy". The kids are grown and I yearn for the intellectual challenge and ability to make a difference in the lives of people that practicing law can provide. If Barnes is right - I have little future to hope for. I was just admitted in Virginia and will be sitting for the NY bar exam later this month. Maybe I'll land a challenging interesting worthwhile position as an attorney. Maybe not. But I got to be the dad I wanted to be.

I imagine this entire article being about selling mobile phone accessories in a mall kiosk instead of biglaw.
"Mobile phone accessory kiosks and the partners in them desperately want to keep people around who are committed and willing to work hard. Your commitment matters. Anything that shows a lack of commitment is discarded like a virus in the most competitive kiosks.
I receive phone calls from mobile phone accessory salesmen daily who have had a good run. They may have made $250,000 in a mobile phone accessory kiosk and then thought it was OK to leave the practice of accessory sales for several months to a year and do something else.

Incidentally, Harrison Barnes has written extensively on that topic too:
Why Going In-house Is Often the Worst Decision a Good Attorney Can Ever Make
Nothing is ever as it seems inside of a law firm, and the myth surrounding not just the parties but the WHOLE ROMANTIC IDEA of going in-house is one of the strangest and most dangerous Jedi mind tricks in the entire legal profession. Going in-house is a CAREER KILLER and something that has destroyed the careers, lives and families of more attorneys than I can count. I speak with them every day and it is depressing and just plain wrong.

real Q is who wants to return to biglaw and why
the thought of returning back to biglaw is so unfathomable to me that i assume that it's for the money
and in this respect HB is not entirely off point -- 250K is not much of a nest egg if u want to spend the rest of ur life doing something that pays virtually nothing'
the key is to minimize expenses and build up to 500K or so, which snowballs much more quickly and spins off enough dividends to fund basic living expenses so u never have to contemplate something like returning to biglaw unless u have a *very* compelling reason to do so

Step 1: Want business?
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit!
The only security that you are ever going to truly find comes from getting business.
How do you get business? There are a lot of ways to get business. Teaching you how to get business is really beyond the scope of this article; however, if you really want business, the surefire way to get business is to really, really want to get business. In order to really want business, you need to really want to be an attorney. If you really want to be an attorney, you are going to try your hardest to be the best at being an attorney. You will work harder and do everything possible to do what is expected of you and more.
