tight core mechanics that are simple, intuitive, and yet have a lot of room for mastery. the tag-team mechanic was an interesting way to both spin a health bar and give the player more options in negotiating levels. animal companions/transformations were an interesting way to change up the gameplay without it feeling too divorced from the core experience, as a lot of 8/16-bit era platformer vehicle stages often did.
level design was mostly good, even if the games were a little reliant on auto-scrollers at times. each location was packed with secrets and the devs did well in creating memorable levels through the use of environmental/mechanical gimmicks.
yeah, the hyper-realistic style of graphics haven't aged as well as, say, pixel-based mega man, but i think the gameplay more than makes up for this. |
