serious question. how can they possibly understand legal argumentation? and how the hell can that person compete against their peers in T6 if that's where they choose to go.

I think they can "read" cases, but they don't understand them. I'm a pros bro, and you see it all the time with crim defense shitlawyers. They'll quote a case that says, "Even if the trial court concluding X constituted error, it wasn't plain error," and argue that the case holds that concluding X constitutes error. It's not even a matter of untangling a complex web of reasoning across multiple cases like law school requires; they can't even read and understand a single sentence in a single case.

I think this is why a lot of those T6 schools have no class rankings and only distinguish between the top 10% of the class (Coif, Law Review) and everyone else.

It's also why schools like Columbia came up with some system to show baseline academic achievement like the Harlan Fiske Stone scholar - you hit a certain GPA in one semester (even if you take super easy curved classes with a ton of dumbs) you can have some "honors" credential tacked to your resume.

It's basically so the AA Admits and the legacies don't get embarrassed.

Yes, you can list Stone or Kent as Honors without disclosing more, which gives the false impression that they're cum/magna, even though they apply only to single academic years.

You see this shit all over biglaw associate profiles.

I do think there are some people that just don't "get" the LSAT but who "get" how law school works and how the game is played at law firms.

I also think these people make some of the "best" (for lack of a better term) biglaw associates.

loads of ADHDmos who blew away the LSAT flame out of big law early because (a) they can't stomach monotony and patternless minutiae (e.g., signature pages) and/or (b) have little opportunity as a junior to use higher-level ability/creativity

I have no legal training whatsoever and find reading cases fairly easy. I particularly enjoy reading newly filed complaints, many of which are linked on a site I frequent. The only cases that give me any trouble are those of a technical nature, such as patent disputes. I could read those ten times and still have no idea what they're about.

Reading cases = reading the court's opinion, not the complaint. I'm sure you wouldn't have much trouble with them because you're a smart poaster dude but you'd have to learn some jargon and a little bit about procedure.

you should just go to law school already man. just fucking take the lsat already. you seem like the kind of smart bro who might just crush it, pull a 175 and go t14. even if not, go to the local shit school and XO will walk you through crushing it there. law school isn't for everyone, especially in your 30s, but I think it is the best option for you. plus I look forward to your law school poasting.

Since I'll presume I'm the only actual lawyer who posts here: T6 lawyers make the SHITTIEST litigators. The level of autism required to score above a 175 translates terribly to any relevant litigation skills, particularly depositions or voir dire - which require in person people skills.

I used to think this was jealous shitboomer flame, but the anecdotes from my own experience are starting to pile up and become data.

Of course, anyone who scores <160 on the LSAT is still a dumb fuck ("street smart" at best), but this shit isn't rocket science. Being substantially smarter than your judge isn't necessary -- what you need, in fact, is a solid understanding of how your judge thinks, which suggests you should just be a little smarter than him -- and being substantially smarter can in fact hurt if its a state-court judge and he decides he hates you because you're fancy and rich and shit.

One thing I'm starting to realize is that it's pretty rare for a really well done brief to make a difference in a case - more often than not the law is pretty clear and it doesn't matter. Meanwhile most of the job is more about staying on top of everything, grinding, being a good negotiator, etc. The place legal reasoning skills arguably does make a difference is in being able to evaluate your own odds rather than in making some brilliant argument to the judge.

Lol at all the self-important autists in here thinking they're some kind of special snowflakes with a valuable skill that others could only dream about possessing.

Um, because you don't have to be smart to be a lawyer.

173 scorer here. Have never used a single part of my brain above the 160 level in my legal career.
