I know, that's what makes it so odd. I've never lived anywhere else, but my parents grew up in another state.

"Crown" is an interesting phenomenon. When they put together pronunciation maps of the country, there is nowhere that shows up with a plurality for "crown" and yet it is mixed in all over (primarily the upper midwest and parts of BosWash, I think). And it isn't just random weirdos here and there who didn't learn it right... everyone in my family says "crown" and I distinctly remember that being the primary pronunciation in my elementary school class room. Also, when I looked into this before, I don't think it was really closely correlated with any other odd regional pronunciation.

Wouldn't "crown" be closest to the original French pronunciation? Seems prestigious.
