There is no conceivable substitute for hard work. You can't intuit the facts. If there's one rule of thumb, it is that the side that works the hardest wins. . . . I don't know any good lawyer who doesn't work his ass off. Until you've done everything you can to win, you're not free to stop. There isn't any other way to do it. If you don't want this, you shouldn't be a litigator.

When Mr. Barr celebrated his 60th birthday earlier this year, the only way his partners could trick him into attending their surprise party was to say that an I.B.M. executive faced insider trading charges and desperately needed to see him at the Drake Hotel in New York.

I rate it as "dude must have some deep-pocketed clients." I would love it if, every once in a while, I had a client that would happily pay me my full rate for every conceivable hour I could put into a case.

Charming the jury (or the judge) was not really Barr's style.

Mr. Barr, a blunt, practical trial lawyer, repeatedly tangled with the mercurial judge in the case, David N. Edelstein of the Federal District Court in Manhattan. Judge Edelstein called Mr. Barr "a very spoiled brat," characterized his conduct as "slippery" and "absurd" and accused him of trying to turn the trial into "a stevedore's brawl."
