d'you use a flashlight?

I've been told when you're out in the boonies there are much more stars visible in the night sky.

I carry one but won't always use it. Especially if the moon is out it's amazing to hike to that light

Have you... Never been in the country or a national park at night? Yes of course there are more stars visible

I grew up with woods behind my house. I'd explore it in the daytime all the time and knew it like the back of my hand. Peering into it at night it scared the shit out of me. I guess when I actually started camping in deep woods in college I realized there was little to fear, and I quickly learned to love the infinity of solitude the twilit forest provided

There ARE scary things in forests at night. Used to live in a tropical location for a while and there were spiders all over the place. One night we were driving down a wooded, forested path and a tarantula actually fell right on our windshield and held on. We had to pull over and get the damn thing off with a stick.

I used to live in an area where my walk to and from the local bar went through this wooded area with a bunch of towering white pines.

The walk back home from the bar was pretty awesome, especially in the winter with some snow cover

yeah winter night forests are highly credited. The snow reflects the moon so it can be bright enough to see without a flashlight and there are never any bugs.

Walking at night in the country or woods on a crisp fall evening is one of those weird, wonderful sim glitches were everything seems heightened, better, and you think every dumb thought you have is profound or elegant.

I used to be terrified but of the woods at nighttime even though I grew up in pretty rural areas.

Military training took care of that though. The first few times they drop you alone in the middle of the woods at night with nothing but a map and compass and instructions to meet at X in 6 hours were always a peak experience. You end up bloody and bruised from all the swamps, rocks, thorns, mountains you end up traversing and you realize animals and bugs are the least of your worries right quick.

The longest course I ever did was about 20 miles (I hear the Delta tryouts culminates in a 50 mile course) and there were times when I was completely lost and just wandering in the hope of running into a stream or lake to guess my position. A compass and pace counting becomes completely useless when navigating through the mountains at nighttime and youre trying to find a 5 foot pole 20 miles alway.

I grew to have mad respect for those kids who were just naturally good at it.

And you learn why we lost Vietnam - home advantage is huge. Whereas the foreign force struggles just to keep from getting hopelessly lost and your attention is focused on keeping track of where you are, the home forces know precisely the best places to hide and lay in ambush.

Imagine youve never been to NYC and youre told to move your platoon from Columbus Corcle to Washington Square park within 2 hours for pickup. For the defenders it would be extremely easy to predict which route you would take (6th or Broadway straightdown) and all the best places to hide to ambush.
