I was scouting out a local card shop because I might sell my old magic cards there and the place was just swarming with teen girls. I swear me and the employee were like the only males in there. it was pretty disorienting.

not flame, i've seen this as well. although most of the time the chicks are accompanied by a guy or two. weird.

btw, what sort of magic cards were you trying to move? duals, wastes, forces? stuff from 04ish that blew up from modern's growth as a format?

I haven't seen my cards in ages, but IIRC I have stuff from masques/invasion/odyssey blocks mostly plus some random singles from arabian nights to urza's. most of it isn't worth shit but I'm 90% sure I have a rishadan port in there and idk what else might turn up. would be fun to look through them at least.

you'd be surprised at some of the stuff that has spiked lately. a lot of commons/uncommons and bulk rares skyrocketed on the back of new printings and formats.

anything in particular from those sets that you can think of? most of my former staple cards seem to be either worth nothing or 1-2 bucks. though if some commons have gone up it could add up.

for masques block it's mostly cards played in edh/commander that might slip under the radar. lots of rares that were bad in regular 60-card constructed are great in 100-card singleton. stuff like bribery, black market, or magistrate's scepter went from bulk to somewhat valuable over the years.

and if you had any unmasks or food chains, they've seen a slight resurgence in competitive play, spiking their respective prices.

also, rhystic study, a common from prophecy, goes for 8 bucks solely from edh/commander demand. that format is cardboard gold.

you might want to check out the mtggoldfish price list. you can sort by set and descending value, making it easier to see if you have any big hits.

one more question: should I sell them online? I feel like it would be easier to sell them to a shop even if I don't get a great price for them, but for certain cards it might make a big difference.

if you don't have a reputable ebay account or haven't been selling on tcgplayer already, online sales can be a pain.

selling on the magic facebook groups (probably not the high-end one unless you have some $200+ cards) is an option, but i can't vouch much for this personally. maybe you could try and find a backpack dealer or big collector to buy your stuff on craiglist or a subreddit, but this could be risky and/or a waste of time; lots of these guys are hustlers.

if you want a mix of convenience and profit, selling to vendors at large events can often be credited. of course, this is dependent on there being a large event near you and you'd have to burn a weekend day to do so; fine if you're playing children's card games, probably miserable for a bro out of the cardboard crack slinging (and who has been laid in the past 5 years).

yeah I'm gonna go with the game store. ty.

though there's another one in town that specializes in magic (the one I went to is more of a comics/anime/old dvds and vinyl type place) where I might get a better price, since their clientele is more likely to know what the cards are worth.

do you make actual money buying and selling these cards or just have lots of experience recouping value from ones you don't want anymore?

i play the "finance" side of the game mostly to minimize the costs of the gaming habit. magic is a goddamn money pit, but with a little effort, one can enjoy the game without getting bled out completely.

that said, the entire micro-economy behind these pieces of cardstock is insane.

My collection for like $500 total with extreme work behind that. Not really worth it
