the 1999 open was weird as fuck though. Paul Lawrie, the winner, started the day TEN SHOTS back. really Justin Leonard should have won, but he came to 18 2 shots back and thought he needed a birdie in order to have a chance to force a playoff if van de velde bogeyed (bc van de velde was playing well, so it was hard to imagine a double or worse, especially since van de velde had birdied 18 2 of the previous 3 rounds). Leonard's aggressive play caused him to bogey 18, and so he fell into the 3-way playoff. A par would have likely won him a second Claret Jug in 3 years. |
