HP is a long commute and that house looks like shit. Bump up your price range and get a place in Evanston or Wilmette or something. Only worry with Evanston is some ghetto areas.
I would take the Chicago job no question unless you need to be around NY for family. So much cheaper.

Not sure if this is completely true. There are definitely striver towns with more working moms and traditional towns with more SAHMs.
Also very few families can afford to have a SAHM in nice areas of NYC/suburbs. You need to make $500k vs. maybe $250k in Chicago.
Still not like you'd find a total lack of working mothers in either area. Also why would it even matter? Can working moms not get along with SAHMs?

Is this JJC? WTF is SAHM culture?
Can you explain why you'd even be exposed to any SAHM culture as a working woman? Aren't you working most of the time by definition? Do SAHMs do different activities on the weekend or something?
Also Winnetka isn't a Jew town. Winnetka and Kenilworth didn't even allow Jews until the 1960s. HP/Glencoe/Evanston/Wilmette are the big tribe zones.

The Jew population outside of Highland Park is very very overstated. They tend to be more around the N/S Glenbrook school districts for some reason.
Not even sure why you lumped Evanston into the equation since that's not true North Shore.
North Shore remains predominately WASP. Not a single Jew on my street. Some people say you can judge the "Jewishness" of a town by how many temples are there. What they fail to consider, is that many Jews from other areas come to the North Shore temples for a variety of reasons.

There is definitely a pervasive "North Shore SAHM" culture that is inescapable. I don't mind it, but I definitely hear people (mostly who don't live in the North Shore) complain about it.
It's basically those 30/40YR SAHMs in their Range Rovers, dyed blonde hair, coffee in the mornings, walk the dogs, take kids to school, go to spa, go to yoga, meet friends for lunch, gossip, gossip and then family time. Harmless and unlike the wretched shrews of New York City, aren't as obsessed with stupid shit like "shopping at Top Shop" or "champagne brunches". It's a lot more wholesome here, with a very big conservative undertone to everything. The typical dress of these SAHM appear to be non-descript tights, Nikes, a fleece zip-up of some kid or vest, some big black sunglasses, a nice (but not too gaudy) handbag and a respectable Rolex. Compare to the NY shrew, obsessing over Burkins and aligator leather. Fuck them.

I ended up taking the NYC job for the following reasons:
-after negotiation the income spread between jobs widened to $150k
-I'm concerned about depreciation in the Chicago RE market at the upper end: https://www.illinoispolicy.org/chicago-lost-more-millionaires-than-any-other-u-s-city-in-2015/
-NYC perspective on the pay offered is that it's a pittance for a GC house slave and that I can retain some dignity by working 9-5, whereas Chicago employer views it as Real Money for which a substantial contribution would be expected
-access to future jobs paying more is greater in NYC

Except #3 is completely wrong because Chicago is probably the laziest major city in the world. Part of the reason for this is that the industries in Chicago are highly successful blue chips that have been around for decades, like McDonalds. They are in no rush to expand or pursue aggressive acquisitions. Since the clientele are chill frat boys who care more about being chill frat boys, even IF you are some shitclit lawyler who wants to gun and push paper, guess what? Client went home at 5:00pm and will literally shoot you in the face if you try to reach him after, so it's pencils down.
You know when the Metra trains are the most packed? Between 4:30pm-5:30pm. The Metra station is damn near empty after 6:30pm.
People in MFH bitch about having to work weekends. People in Chicago bitch when they miss Happy Hour on Monday.

Prices have been stagnant in Lake Forest and other far out places since 2007.
Sure, your home may not lose value in nominal terms, but stagnant prices for such a big ticket item is not good.
Chicago has stopped attracting immigrants and is losing people due to domestic migration. This is hitting poor areas the hardest, but it's hardly a boomtown for everyone else.
The much vaunted chill corporate culture in Chicago is in part due to the cheap real estate, which wouldn't be so cheap if more people wanted to live there.

You're clearly a smart guy and have made good choices in your life to get to where you are at, but you screwed up big time this time around, bro.
Your biggest mistake was looking at Highland Park. At $500,000 annual salary, you could have easily afforded a house in the $800-1Million range in somewhere like Glencoe or Winnetka. For some reason, Highland Park gets a big bump on xoxo but it's clearly the worst of the North Shore suburbs (unless you include Northfield, but even parts of Northfield are great). Highland Park homes are generally smaller and uglier, it's right next to Ft. Sheriden which is really ghetto, the down-town area sucks.
This is the life that you missed out on:
1) Wake up at 7am in your beautiful, large pre-war house to the sound of birds and the clearest blue sky you can imagine. Have coffee and breakfast in your sunroom with your family.
2) Get in your Porsche and drive the 15-20 minutes to work by 8/8:30 (people start early in Chicago).
3) Chicago "corp" is EXTREMELY chill. I mean crazy chill. People are incredibly laid back and gunning is frowned upon. Gunning and working too hard will kill your reputation.
4) At or around 4pm, people start leaving the office. Yes, literally around 4pm.
5) Let's just pretend that you are one of the "gunners". So you work hard, you call it a day at 5:30, somedays at 4:30 because you want to catch your son's softball game. Yes, people do this ALL THE FUCKING TIME. ALL THE TIME. ALL THE TIME. IT IS PERFECTLY NORMAL AND EXPECTED THAT YOU ARE A FAMILY MAN FIRST. GET YOUR FUCKING ASS OUT OF THE OFFICE YOU FUCK, is probably what your boss would tell you, but he's already left the office at 5pm and there's literally NOBODY, not even the fucking janitor, left on your floor after 6pm. You could fire a machine gun on your floor at 7:00pm and there wouldn't be anybody who would hear you. Hell, they'd probably call the cops if you're at the office that late thinking you're a burgler or terrorist.
6) You get home and have dinner with your family at 6:30pm.
7) Either chill in your big house sipping hot choco by your working fireplace, maybe go for a jog in your absolutely beautiful neighborhood with gorgeous houses and scenic roads. Maybe you'll stroll down to one of the several public beaches and listen to the waves of Lake Michigan on a cool summer night and gaze at reflection of the Moon on the water. The air feels, tastes amazing.
8) Or maybe you'll go to one of over a dozen tennis courts within half a mile of you and hit some balls, or go play with your kids in your backyard.
9) On weekends, the North Shore is perfect. No traffic whatsoever, extremely safe, numerous places to have great coffee and brunch, multiple golf courses, easy access to boating if that's your thing, you have the Botanic Gardens, the Skokie Lagoons, just so much to do as a family without any of the BS or hassle. If you want to go see a show or the museum, the city is a 30 minute drive away.
10) Your kids attend by default New Trier, one of the top public school systems in the country. If you don't like the size, send them to the very good private Country Day School which is 5 miles away.
11) If your wife is a SAHM, she'll enjoy hanging out with all the other SAHMs. The downtown areas of Winnetka/Glencoe/Willmette/Kenilworth are filled with small, boutique shops with very little big corporate interference. Everyone knows the employees/owners of these shops and it's all big smiles and hellos. They know about your children, they know where you went to vacation, it's all extremely friendly.
12) Soooo many opportunities for an active lifestyle, as mentioned above. What I didn't mention is that on weekend mornings, there are more joggers and cyclists on the roads than cars. It feels less like living in a "suburb" as opposed to a beautiful nature preserve with gorgeous houses.
13) If you like hunting or other outdoor activities, extremely easy to do. Several of my friends were wealthy farmers or did MANLY THINGS like owned HVAC businesses or the like. These guys are all millionaires, all incredibly chill and relaxed and we would typically just watch sports, drive our cars, go snowmobiling, go boating, golf, BBQ with the families or shoot guns on the weekends. Did I mention, nobody ever checks their work phones on the weekends?
My favorite was when it rained. Lying in my California king-size bed listening and watching the rain in the spring without another sound or distraction in the world.
You fucked up. Get to the North Shore as soon as possible.

The Lake.

Whether you boat or not, just a nice place to go to relax. Did I mention numerous playgrounds/tennis courts within walking distance?
Architecturally significant houses.

Beautiful houses everywhere. No two houses look the same on any street. It makes for amazingly pleasant walks with your dog.
Beautiful downtown areas.
https://fuelfed.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/fuelfed-coffee-classics-people.jpg
Lots of events happening, great community and places to shop, eat, drink.
I'm not even getting into the beauty of Lake Shore Drive or the amazing architecture of Chicago.
https://img1.10bestmedia.com/Images/Photos/257006/p-CC-chicago-beachfront_54_990x660_201404252111.jpg
Or the historical significance of the city.
Or the amazing sports culture, if you're into that.
Or the amazing economy (very healthy economy based on Blue Chips like McDonalds, Boeing, and tech companies like Groupon, plus traditional industries like agriculture logistics).
Yeah, it gets cold in the winter, and if you for some idiotic reason decide to go to South Chicago or West Chicago, you'll encounter some dangerous neighborhoods, and yeah, it's flat as a preteen and there are no mountains for skiing, but otherwise it really is an amazing place to live.

Lol having a bad day?
I just gave you a bunch of reasons why I avoid Sheridan Rd. If I need to head south, I'll take Greenbay. 25mph REALLY sucks, and it REALLY sucks when a cop pulls you over for going 30mph. The houses along Sheridan are gorgeous (what you can see of them anyway, since the really nice ones are gated and covered by trees). It's also criminally dangerous to try cycling down Sheridan Rd (hence few people do this) because even though there is a bike path, it is always covered in debris or potholes) and the road itself is too narrow for cars to safely pass cyclists.
You sound like someone who doesn't live here...the "wonders" of Sheridan Rd doesn't really appeal to anyone who actually lives nearby and sees it everyday. But maybe I'm biased because I drive a Porsche and feel stupid driving around at 25mph.
Also, Sheridan only really "winds" for a very short stretch, maybe 1 mile between Glencoe and Highland Park and half a mile stretch on the border of Glencoe and Winnetka. The rest of it is straight and boring, especially once you get down to Willmette. Then it's just a series of stop lights, left and right turns, stop lights, straight, ugly houses, BAM you're in the ghetto of Evanston.
If you want "real beautiful roads", well there are a whole bunch North of the North Shore, windy roads in the forest that are MILES long with little to no traffic in either direction. Also, many of the streets OFF of Sheridan are much more beautiful, I can think of a couple in Winnetka and Lake Forest, that absolutely blow your mind.

The consensus above seems to be that I'm retarded, so I'll offer some more detail on the decision:
After I established myself in each role, the Chicago job would likely average ~5 more hours per week than the NYC one. NYC in general has a far inferior work culture to Chicago, but there are pockets of smart but lazy people in NYC who manage to build alternatives. This difference is in part because the specific Chicago employer is much more acquisitive, with M&A leading to time pressure and longer hours.
I agree that the North Shore suburbs are nice, but NYC has great suburbs too and much of the above conflates the regional choice with an urban vs suburban one. For example, let's say I live in Glen Ridge ( http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/11/20/realestate/glen-ridge-nj-neighborly-and-close-to-midtown.html ). My commute would be longer, but I can shift some work to the train and if I spend an extra 30 minutes each way commuting NYC has broken even vs Chicago in terms of total work time.
Cost of living in the suburbs doesn't seem that different. Let's say I up my budget to around $800k and live somewhere like https://www.redfin.com/IL/Glencoe/770-Vernon-Ave-60022/home/13791740. 2200 square feet, $18k in taxes, beautiful old architecture, walkscore of 73. Or I can live in https://www.redfin.com/NJ/Glen-Ridge/3-Appleton-Pl-07028/home/36165106. $30k more expensive, 2200 square feet, $22k in taxes, beautiful old architecture, walkscore of 67.
But that ignores different real estate price trajectories: according to Zillow, Glencoe prices dropped 1.3% in value last year, and Glen Ridge prices increased by 5.3%. So that's a 6% spread in outcomes. On $800k of principal, if that were to continue it would be $48k of additional annual income living in NJ, and would be tax-free so equivalent to $80k of pre-tax income. A 6% spread may not continue, but even half that would be pretty meaningful.
So at the end of the day I'll be saving $6k more per month in the NYC burbs from the extra $150k comp (extra $75k after taxes), making a better real estate investment, and I'll have access to the larger NYC employment market for future opportunities. Yes being next to the beach would be nice in those few warm months, but for now I'll survive.
