I was thinking about this some more and I think EVH could be viewed as the Picasso of guitar.
Picasso went back to one-dimensional paintings like the pre-renaissance religious painters, creating a full-circle.
EVH's guitar playing was devoid of "funk". There is nothing funky about him and the 70s were all about funk.
So I can view EVH as returning to the pre-funk style of music while adding a modern twist, like Picasso did.
Having said that, Eruption still sucks.
