Ever get the impression that your parents had sorted out all the important details of their lives (marriage, kids, homeownership) a lot sooner than you have at the same age?

You’re not alone. Millennials are waiting later to have kids, and when they do look to buy homes, they face a ton of affordability issues. Comparing your life now to your parents’ lives decades ago is like comparing apples to oranges.

Still, it’s interesting to see how things have changed. In The Scene video above, a mom and daughter review what they’d respectively achieved at the age of 27. It’s easily one of the most relatable things we’ve seen in a while.

Mom at 27: “I had my first child ― my son.”

Daughter at 27: “I have food babies when I eat burritos.”

And then there’s this exchange, about homeownership or lack thereof:

Mom at 27: “I had built a house at 23 and it’s the same home I still live in now. Four bedroom, four bathrooms, a finished basement, two car garage.”

Daughter at 27: “I rent an apartment where if I lie down I can touch every wall. I don’t have a closet.”

Food babies nonsense aside, the article makes a good point. Neither of my parents went to college or had any marketable skills, yet they owned a home and all kinds of other assets when they were my age. Me? Ljl

women entering the workforce has had a far, far greater impact on incomes than immigration. third greatest impact is massive rising healthcare costs causing wages to stagnate. first is technology. immigration is a distant fourth.

also all the policies propping up boomer housing prices have fucked the next generation from ever owning a home, and that's before the $1.6 trillion in student loans we carry.

yeah life is hard who cares who had it better, it is true that writing whiny articles about it solves nothing.

house when my mom graduated college cost just under $200K in inflation-adjusted dollars and was new construction. same house now costs $800K and is 40 years old.

that's $350K in today's dollars. the main problem in most areas is that wages have stagnated.

in some areas though, like California, the housing prices are all fucked too.

These kinds of articles are so fucking stupid.

There was a massive, nation-changing recession in 2008 on top of trends that have pushed us this way for decades. This is just women complaining they can't be both PROFESSIONAL SHREW SEX AND TEH CITY and also SAHM where they can finally stop doing hard stuff now, thx. (which is what they want)
