i think 'heavy' pilots have it better w/r/t busywork, but they are also away from home a lot more doing shipments and shit.
not sure how the navy is, but imagine there's less BS and more chill time when they're not on the boat

The Navy payed off all of his student loans, and he could take an F-18 for a spin more or less whenever he wanted.

you either have a 20 yr career, earn a lot less than civilian physicians and all the bullshit that comes with the military or you exit and have to do another residency to get real civilian training (supper shitty when your 33 and have kids) |

If this guy loved it (quintessential east coast stoner, touch of wigger, hippy turned successful executive father & etc), it's hard for me to imagine anyone except the most nebbish of dorks not liking it.
He also noted that ex-flignt surgeons are a very tight group, and they go the extra mile to help fresh out of Navy flight surgeons to match well, resulting in a much better residency.
