Hard to explain the brain damage otherwise. The doctors probably told the family privately to avoid (perceived) embarrassment.

there's no way the brain damage could've been caused by guards choking him out, or asphyxiation due to some unimaginable torture or sadistic experimentation? keep in mind that we're speculating about the conduct of an alien insect species, and not actual human beings

"Injury was largely confined to the CA1 layer of the hippocampus.": hippocampus is especially sensitive to oxygen deprivation and atrophies in hypoxic state.

"In both experimental models two types of cell change were prominent: coagulative cell change which was restricted to neurons, and edematous cell change which was largely confined to astrocytes.": neurons clump together, while a non-neuronal type of cells called astrocytes swell in hypoxia.

"Studies on cerebral microcirculation revealed a close relationship between areas of reduced flow and areas with structural damage. Cytochemical demonstration of subcellular calcium indicated an early and important redistribution of this cation, indicative for toxic calcium overload in the cytosol.": you see higher than normal levels of calcium inside cells.

It is true that the prolonged coma could make pathologic analysis difficult, but as the quoted pathologist says, an autopsy could have led to either positive information confirming a cause, or negative information to rule out botulism, etc.

Well, first of all, the poasted quotes from the path guy are generalizable statements.

Second, even with reduced chances of finding satisfactory evidence, an autopsy is much likelier to yield useful info than no autopsy.

“When you don’t do that, then families often linger with nagging questions that may have been resolved at autopsy,” he said, adding that examinations in this case could also be important for international affairs. “An autopsy is the way that you are best able to get good evidence. That is, it matters.”

“The most important thing I think it could tell us is the general nature of what caused the brain damage and it might give us some idea if it was continuing or in the past,” said Victor Weedn, a forensic pathologist and professor of forensic sciences at George Washington University.

"Weedn said an autopsy may also help to rule out causes, including trauma or infection. In some cases, he said, autopsies can help find discrepancies in stories."

it's their MO

they could have come up with a bunch of much more plausible stories than the crazy and obviously untrue story about the church/used car payment, for example, which seems like it was developed by a low-level propaganda worker who just jumbled a bunch of words together without actually understanding how western culture operates

the botulism "explanation" has that same tint of surrealism

There was speculation almost immediately that there was a gap in translation. They said botulism but maybe meant food poisoning.

Either way - 'he's in a coma because we gave him a sleeping pill and he didn't wake up' is perfectly North Korean. They tried to help him and him being in a coma is his fault bc he didn't wake up.

North Korea is known to do asphyxiation torture to prisoners. Some guard probably went too far and caused permanent damage.

Why make up a botulism story and sleeping pill scenario if this were true?

I call bullshit.

I think he was oxygen deprived, but I don't think it was self-inflicted.

This whole "no autopsy to avoid embarrassment" wouldn't rule out torture or self-inflicted.

The family probably doesn't need to know more than what they already do. An autopsy 18 months later wouldn't get them any more closure than not having one at this point.

I was actually in agreement with the op until I read this. This is a compelling point. Even if they were unreasonably prone to lying, it seems like they would come up with a lie more closely aligned with what really happened. Their story was weird as fuck, which makes me think the truth is also weird as fuck.

"Use by country[edit]

North Korea[edit]

North Korea is alleged by retired US Army intelligence officer Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer to have used Sodium Pentothal on Otto Warmbier. Shaffer believes mental degredation was caused by overuse of the compound. North Korea blamed the condition on use of a sleeping pill and botulism"

That would explain the rationale for toxicity and brain chemistry that they were afraid would be uncovered. Also explains Warmbier's zombie like appearance at court.

This pretty much explains why they were going for a drug/toxicity factor instead of oxygen deprivation.

Close to the truth, but a different cause.
