Poast new message in this thread
Date: July 17th, 2017 10:23 PM Author: Slippery Sanctuary
So here's the deal. I've been with this place since its inception, and below are five enduring and oft-repeated memes from the last few years that xo loves to repeat, but aren't quite right. And yes, I know for every one person spreading the meme in question, there's already someone else out there saying it's stupid, etc. I just wanted to throw my two cents in. For each of these, it's not quite that the XO conventional wisdom is wrong, it's just that it's more nuanced, and I wouldn't want any newcomers to get the wrong idea.
Also, I am bored tonight. Here we goooo...
(1) ARE country is incredible and I would be happier there than a big city
When you're working sixty-five hours (or more) per week, paying $3,000 per month in loans and $2,500 for a pre-war 1BR in Brooklyn Heights and your net worth is in the red, doesn't sound awesome to just kick back in your big house with your beautiful wife and a bunch of bros on the weekend after phoning it in at your 37.5 hr/$60k job at MidAmerica Co?
In reality, a lot of people here would find ARE COUNTRY and the people in it uneducated, intolerable, and dull. The worst part of it is that a lot of what xo grinders think makes ARE COUNTRY great - aside from the low cost of living - is the sense of local community that people have (much of which is developed through church and similar organizations). For the most part, xo'ers would not enjoy being part of these communities, nor would they be welcome there. That (among other reasons) is why we've never seen a mass exodus of poasters from NYC to Houston/Dallas/Kansas City.
(2) BIGLAW is completely terrible we all made a massive mistake
The memes here are the ones that come from disappointed/irate partners ("This was not what I expected. Please come to my office to discuss" after you've left for the day).
This obscures the truth: BIGLAW is a good way to make a TON of money. A few of us enjoy grinding enough to make a career out of it, but for most of us it's just a means to an end. So grind for a few years, get out when you can if that's what you want, and avoid being Peter from WSGR. You pay off your loans and do 2 more years or so, you'll have enough capital to do whatever you want, including taking time off, moving to a lower paid job, or starting your own business.
Of course, you didn't wind up in BIGLAW because you were a risk taker...you wound up there because you know it is better than what 99.9 percent of all people alive today will ever hope to achieve, to say nothing of all the people who have ever lived. We'd all do well to remember that.
(3) Alcohol = POISON
This one needs no introduction.
Of course we all know that alcohol is fine in moderation. The issue is a profession that expects you to work 2600 hours per year doesn't exactly set the tone for moderation.
Rather than going cold turkey or getting demolished every few days, focus on savoring nice booze when you've done something to earn it, in the company of interesting people if the opportunity, but sometimes alone. If you're having trouble controlling your desire for it, exercise, intercourse, and marijuana (if legal where you are) all work pretty well.
If you don't let the excessive demands of your work shape your demand for alcohol, alcohol won't be a poison, but one of many occasional indulgences that makes life worth living.
(4) All women are terrible/crazy/etc and you should never get married
The idea is basically that women are constantly alternating between clever deviousness and abject irrationality, they will poison you in one way or another, and that by the time you realize it, you will basically be driven to ruin.
In reality, many woman are 180, and they aren't all that hard to find. If you live in NYC or another big city, and are actually looking to settle down with a woman, get on match, spend some time making a profile, and do a real message exchange before going out to ensure you're not wasting your time. Do this enough times and you will meet someone who is acceptable enough to marry and have kids with, if that is what you want.
Of course if you just want secks/short term stuff = tinder.
(5) Global capitalism and modernity have made everything terrible
We're all rootless cosmopolitans with no national/community/ethic identity now because of global cap, and we just grind away in hope of spending our precious free time and money to buy whatever worthless trinket/beer/game of thrones episode the corporations are shoving down our throat. We have no real connections with anyone anymore and leave lost touch with our families ("see you 11 times before you die dad!") so we can work hard to keep the masters happy . . .
The reality is that in a lot of way things are better now than they have ever been. Medical science means that people are living longer, fewer people are dying in wars than anytime in human history, we can skype our friends and family that are thousands of miles away (or go visit them in a car/plane/train). We have devices that put the sum of all human knowledge at our fingertips, and even the least fortunate among us in the US have or soon will have access to them. We might work harder than our boomer parents (lol), but compared to previous generations we won't be dying of plague or having our heads mounted on pikes. Yes, alienation (in the Marxist sense) is a real thing, but it's probably a small price to pay given all the advances we've made. Life is better than it has ever been.

1) Not much to say here. I did leave NYC biglaw and moved to Dallas and it has been 170.
2) You might be referring to biglaw corporate which actually has exit options. LJL at biglaw litigators.
3) No comment either way.
4) In reality, *some* women are 180, and they are very hard to find. And that's for white bros. If you are an Asian man, as many are on this bort, things are indeed very difficult.
5) Mostly agree. But one effect of GC is feminism and that absolutely positively sucks. It has made what should be a 180 existence, as you allude to in this section, into a 160 existence.

(1) Good for you... I have family in ARE COUNTRY and I know it wouldn't be for me, though I once harbored illusions.
(2) I mean there are certainly options, but people have to be willing to develop them, to pivot, and to take a pay cut.
(4) Well, I'm not claiming a majority are 180 . . . just that there are many out there. And yes, they are *somewhat* hard to find, but it doesn't mean that the don't exist or that they are unobtainable.
(5) It depends what you mean by feminism. If you think that it means that women should have the same opportunities as men, and should not be discriminated against because of their gender, I'm all for that and I would thank GC for that. But I suppose GC is also at least partially responsible for the idea that it's "bad" if a women stays home with her children, etc., and that's too bad.

Re: #5
"Medical science means people are living longer". This is not a good thing.
"We have devices that put the sum of all human knowledge at our fingertips". And literally no one uses those devices for this purpose.

Brother, on a theological, existential level, I disagree with you.
If I could, I would take this list and nail it on the door of my law firm like Martin Luther titled as the "Five Objective Truths of Our Time."

(1) ARE country is incredible and I would be happier there than a big city
"ARE COUNTRY" is a large place. Is it Dallas? Kansas City? Portland? Hartford? Miami? 3 hours outside Wichita? Most XOers suffer from "grass is greener" syndrome here.
Low COL is 180, and secondary cities are seeming to develop into a sweet spot where you can get a lot of NYC-style amenities and culture for a much lower price tag. But a lot of people in those towns have community networks that they've cobbled together for decades via church or civic organizations, and it's hard for someone to break in as an outsider professionally and socially.
(2) BIGLAW is completely terrible we all made a massive mistake
BIGLAW sucks, but if you want to be a traditional breadwinner and hate math, it's not a bad way to vault into an upper-upper-middle-class lifestyle.
(3) Alcohol = POISON
It's poison and bad for you, but so are many things. Don't drink every day and don't binge drink on weekends and you'll be fine.
(4) All women are terrible/crazy/etc and you should never get married
The common denominator between all of these so-called crazy women is the XO poaster who says this shit.
(5) Global capitalism and modernity have made everything terrible
Then grow your own crops in the backyard and sew your own blue jeans.
