the entire movie before sunset is basically prelude to sex with a person you just met. thats such a dream scenario...meet a stranger, spend all freaking day with them, and cap it off with sex at sunset. then wave goodbye forever. why did this never occur to me as a possibility? oh right, because that doesnt really happen very often, now does it?

it was a moment in time. everything seemed possible, and nothing was solid, life was suspended. even the trees were different. the horizon was infinite, and the past almost forgotten. then, the terrorists struck and we woke up. gen x and their culture went down the trash with it.

Basically all of Linklater's movies other than Fastfood Nation and School of Rock (though I think I could make a case for School of Rock) are explicitly and mainly about resisting GC. Part of it is the super self-indulgent non-plots and dialogue which is like bad French New Wave schtick. But the only real merit of the movie--which was understood at the time by Gen X audiences--was the point that it made about how 180 it can be to backpack around Europe and try to fuck hot chicks using your pseudo-intellectual schtick. That was a cultural phenomenon that became much more popular with Gen X than it ever was with boomers, and the entire premise of it, as explicitly discussed in the movie, is that you're steeling yourself to deal with GC and trying to envision some way around it. This was the kind of thing middle class Americans could do when a public four year degree cost less than 10k and even a fancy private school was 50-100 depending on financial aid, etc. People had the luxury of not thinking of themselves as slaves to money, so they could try on different personas and explore other fantasy paths. I can't watch this movie anymore, partly because it is so earnestly enanamoured with these two completely self-obsessed people, but mainly because it just makes me sad that people have no concept of this mentality of not seeing themselves as completely engulfed by GC's demands.

really enjoyed this poast, and i haven't seen the movie so i maybe im missing something, but lets not pretend gen x invented wanderlust, mooching off mommy and daddy while trying to get laid, sowing your wild oats.

pretty sure thats a major theme of the first ever autobiography. going a little overboard on the "GC" theory

Yeah fair and I struggled to find a better way to phrase that. My point was that the college semester/summer abroad became a much more common right of passage during Gen X's coming of age and the main thesis of the movie that was cool/worthwhile was taking seriously the suspicion with which that experience regarded an adult life of marriage/kids/wageslaving/mortgage payments, etc. Contrast with millennials who have coming of age stories about their Facebook post going viral and making them instafamous. One generation struggled with confronting the reality of GC and the other tried/tries to pretend away its problems on the Internet. And I should add that I don't blame millennials for just rejecting/avoiding their reality, but it's why they don't "get" this movie.

Although it isn't really respected as a movie, I really enjoyed Slacker -- partly for the reasons you mention. Makes me nostalgic for that time and living in a large college town.
