One would think that some trial judges would want to get right for the sake of being principled, but do judges ever making rulings they personally are not fans of in order not to be reversed and suffer humiliation?

my district court judge was new and pretty averse to being reversed under higher standards of review. but on legitimately close questions and de novo review, it was kinda like eh fuck it we're all just making it up
