I just got Possibility of an Island by Houellebecq. Going to get The Magus and Notes from the Underground next. What else should I put on my list?

Wtf

Raëlian beliefs and practices are the concepts and principles of the religion founded by Claude Vorilhon, a former French auto racing journalist who changed his name to Raël.[1][2] Followers of Raëlism are believers in an advanced race of extraterrestrials called Elohim who created life on earth.[3] Raëlians are individualists who believe in sexual self-determination.[4]

Boring and misogynistic. Refers to women's vaginas as "dwarf tunnels." What a waste of money.

The comparison with Joyce is interesting, because Joyce is often unreadable while describing mundane stuff, while Wolfe is highly readable while describing bizarre events. Of course even being readable it's still very hard to tell what's going on.

They're all pretty different. Flashman is the most XO in themes but besides that is basically straightforward historical fiction. Gene Wolfe is much more complicated stuff; check the New Yorker link to get an idea. Maybe start with his short stories to see if you like him.

Aristophanes is the world's oldest comic playwright and most of his works ridicule shitlibs. In The Knights he ridicules Cleon by among other things suggesting he has a blown-out asshole.

There's other fiction I like out there but I'm not sure how much I'd call XO.

RAN HERE to recommend Flashman

Literally reading Flashman and the Dragon as I compose this poast; if you want hilariously racist and impeccably accurate historical fiction, the Flashman series is the way to go

How did Houellebecq come to be a consensus choice? I saw him mentioned elsewhere and got two of his novels and they were good but now everyone on XO trolls for him.
