Fifth year, primarily securities litigation, with some general lit. Just has a babydood, so need more predictable and humane hours.

Been applying to inhouse jobs for the past 6 months, wonly gotten 3 interviews. Once of them turned into an offer for SEC compliance at a F500 company. Salary will be ~$150k. Obviously a big pay cut, but think I'm going to be pushed out in a year anyway (good reviews, but bad hours).

What should I do bros?

There's not enough work. Gen lit has been slow for the past year and securities lit work has been nonexistent for two years. I never turn down work.

I should add that things are slow enough that service partners are hoarding work that would normally be passed on to me.

Go boutique for a while and make some money. Securities reg stuff has a good parachute market. Make money now. The kid won't remember and you don't need to be there every moment to enjoy and remember those years. Jump to paper-pushing for Janice from HR when you want to go assistant coach the soccer team. You'll never make real money again if you tuck in for in-house dinner as your first stop out of biglaw.

Explain. I am law review T10 with a good clerkship (think E.D.N.Y.) and some trial experience, so I think I'd have a shot at a boutique, but I don't want to work the long, unpredictable law firm hours anymore. Are boutiques better? I like the word, I just want my nights and weekends to hang out with babydood.

No, boutiques (the good ones anyway) are not better, but you make less money. Also when you start a new job, you have to prove yourself all over again and can't just slack off right away. You're only billing 1700 hours/year making more in biglaw, ride the gravy train until you get fired and keep looking. I bet you can find a legal gig in the next year or 2.

That's not too bad. It's something worth doing especially if you feel meh about the practice of law. The one thing is that large companies normally require you to stay in your position for a year before jumping to another dept (unless you get your manager's permission). So you have to keep that in mind. But, it's not uncommon for people to jump between compliance and legal or other departments like risk. You'll just have to network a little bit, and that'll be much easier once you're in-house.

Do you mind saying what kind of compliance you'd be doing? handing client disputes, finding and monitoring potential applicable laws/regulations, or writing compliance manual?

Is this a legal job or a compliance job? I wouldn't take it if it were a compliance job but would if legal. I did securities lit mostly as well and there is like nothing. Spin yourself as specializing in something else if you can.

Don't do it, id take a legal gig paying less compared to this. Have you looked at SEC exam/enforcement jobs? They have field offices so it's not just in DC. they actually want securities litigators.

It seems most compliance jobs are total dead ends and pay less than "comparable" in-house legal jobs. Although I guess there is the outside chance you could climb the latter to CCO.
