Places I know happy lawyers:BlackRock, Cap Group, TRowe, Vanguard, Fidelity, Dimensional, etc.

Kinder Morgan, InBev, Cargill

also know guys at Broadridge and DTC who swear by financial services back office companies.

Financial services back office is chill but doesn't go anywhere. The other places are decent if you're the institutional investing side or alternative assets, but not retail. Coordinating 15c letters for fidelity and vanguard's mutual funds is pretty awful.

Honestly I think if you want to do financial services, working in a family office or outsourced CIO type place is the way to go...not cutthroat or volatile like a hedge fund that can go belly up easily but also not cookie cutter like you're in an army of 1000 lawyers at state street or whatever who never advance.

At large financial institutions it's all about getting the right rabbi. The problem is that you don't know if u have a shitty mgr or not until you're a few months in. Although, large institutions allow for moving within the company, which is nice. The key to getting the right comp etc is to have them do a buy back by presenting an offer from a competitor.

Fidelity/vanguard/etc have a lot of terrible roles you'd need to avoid, but culturally respect lawyers so if you end up coordinating M&A, facing the regulators on difficult issues etc. that type of role can have great pay and reasonable hours.

What are the ones you'd regard as terrible? I don't know any unhappy (good) lawyers at the fund shops. There are TTTs who wander into crappy legal roles, but I don't really think they should count for this purpose.

I'm a weird specialty-mo. Did ~5 years BigLaw, ~2yrs BigFed, ~3 yrs BigLobbying, and now I am BigFinancialServices. Made my year-equivalent BigLaw base with no bonus at the trade. Kept the base and got more bonus moving in-house.

I was very happy at my trade association plying my specialty. It's an interesting hybrid role. The real lobbyists viewed me as their technical guy. The real technical people at the member firms and law firms viewed me as their connected industry and regulator guy. Everyone viewed me as a hub of information for our specialty within the industry. You'll do a LOT of speaking and need extremely good soft skills for a law geek.

The industry itself matters a great deal. In financial services the Investment Company Institute (registered funds), American Bankers, Chamber of Commerce, American Life Insurance Council, and a few others are good for lawyers. SIFMA (representing the brokers) less so. I don't think you could get me to the Managed Funds Association (representing the hedge funds) for 50% more money.

The most important part is how visible the lawyers at trades are. Everyone in your niche will know you (for better or worse). You'll get offers to go back to firms (as a partner, with the understanding that you'll use your industry contacts to generate business. I would really have needed to stay longer to feel confident I could make that work.), to regulatory boutiques, and, best of all, to your member companies. If there is a member you really like, based in a city you would like to move to, just cozy up and bide your time. And you should have enough contact with the members that you'll know their people and culture well, making that in-house move much lower risk.

My husband works in the defense industry on the engineering side. It is basically a govt job with the amount of red tape and inefficiencies that exists. There are boomer engineers there who don't use email and don't know certain software and they have pensions and will never be fired. Meanwhile, the younger people don't have pensions. Also the pay sucks and promotions highly politicized and not based on merit. I can't imagine lawyers there make great money. It is certainly a chill job though.

The govt will dole out contracts evenly to make sure the big ones won't have issues. Northrop got the b-21 stealth bomber so somebody else will get the next big thing. It's also easy to move to a competitor if you have the right security clearance (SCI) so it's a very stable industry overall. That's how my husband is getting promotions since he can't do it just by getting his 3-5% every year when new hires are getting more money than him.
