If you are approached by a client for an in-house position, how much leeway (if any) is normal on salary? Do they generally stick close to what they have paid others in the same position (I.e., what you see on glassdoor)?

Asking for a friend.

Lmao unless you have some ridiculously nuanced expertise, or you're at the deputy GC level or above, you have very little leverage. Even if they offer at the bottom of the pay band, you're only going to be able to negotiate up 10-20k MAX

Why are the only options in the legal market 350k at a law firm or 150k in house? Why aren't there options in the middle? This seems very inefficient.

There are... you probably move down to a smaller firm with slight better QOL for less money. Senior associates in tertiary cities probably make like $200-$250k with decent chances of making partner.

Tech and finance are two huge industries with thousands of jobs.

Outside of that, I know people who work in random in house companies like Toyota, Mattel, various pharma companies, etc who have $200k in house jobs. Entertainment studio type jobs and insurance industry jobs pay poorly as an industry so avoid those.

This is accurate for big companies. If you max out your salary demands, you can try for a sign-on bonus (but it's generally not a lot). Passing the salary band would require approvals to bump your title, etc, which is a real pain in the ass to get approvals for.

Also raises vary by company, some ppl get a small 2% bump every year while others get like a 10% bump every other year, etc. If you want to do it right, you need to do the buy-back -- get an offer from a competitor and have your company match.

Does the "buy back" strategy let you get around their procedural rules for exceeding the salary bands?

Yeah kind of, In effect you're just forcing them to promote you. They'll put you in a different band before they make one off exceptions.

Not sure how buy-backs work elsewhere, but its not unusual at my place. Some complain that it's unfair to the loyal employees, but it's like, senior mgt has obviously showed you the play book -- just follow it.

Unless you're a partner being recruited specifically for a c-suite (or similarly senior) position, you have little leverage. There are hundreds of other biglaw associates willing to work for less money.

I've heard of people negotiating effectively in this situation by threatening to go in-house to a competitor (assumes you have some specific valuable institutional knowledge / experience).
