They were exposed to Greek culture more early and more often.
Greeks were exposed to civilizations on the eastern med more early and more often, and those cultures probly got their start by interacting with the Middle East/Egypt.
If Britain were a couple more hundred miles west the celts would've been fucked up come 1500 same as the aztecs or mayans

Rome had closer ties to Mediterranean and near-eastern cultures while Celts, Germans, etc were in the sticks.
Also, the Romans spoke an Indo-European ("aryan") language.
