I once re-routed the control wiring for a massive diesel propulsion engine aboard a ship because it was starting when it was not supposed to start.

Also, I now have a portable emergency charger that makes it easy.

yes. I also keep a charger and a car tire kit in the car for myself or if someone needs help. I've pulled over to help people on the road several times. I would say most of them simply don't know what to do and you just walk through it be it a dead battery or a tire.

I forget what order you're supposed to connect the clamps. Also on one of the cars you're supposed to put the black/neg. clamp on the frame of the car, not the neg. battery terminal for some reason. I'd have to check the owners manual.

I usually connect the black ones to both cars, connect the red to the functioning car battery, start up the functioning car, then connect the red to the dead battery, let it charge for 30 seconds, then try to start the dead battery car.

This seems to always work, even if I am wrong.

Does it really matter what order you hook up the cables? I'm sure I've done it wrong and the car still starts. I think they say that you can cause an explosion or something if you do it wrong, but so far I'm still alive.

Tip for master men: If it doesn't start even after you hook up the cables, try gunning the accelerator on the dead car as you start it. I didn't know that trick for a long time.
