I used to wonder why I could get away with slacking sometimes and not others, and think my supervisors were, with few exceptions, supersmart workaholics. Now that I understand that they're all as mediocre and depressed as me and have basically developed different strategies to fake it with their peers and supervisors, it allows me to be a lot less anxious minute to minute and day to day at work.
