For me it had to be when I realized how many companies are very similar to each other culturally and nothing you experienced in the workplace was essentially unique.

The root of the word "passion" is suffering, so I feel that many of us have a great deal of passion in our work.

law firms are kind of unique in the modern white collar world, in that they don't cram a lot of Rah-Rah Go Team! crap down your throat. This chick I know works for a company with a stuffed animal mascot that "travels" from department to department every month. When it's you're month your department all takes a picture with the stuffed animal and - not flame - writes a paragraph about what XYZCorp means to you. (The animal's name is XYZie of course).

Agreed. I think most people in law firms are pretty blunt about how much the job sucks and they are just doing it for the money. Even rainmaker partners.

They also have a vested interest in burning out most of their new employees in 3-5 years and then harvesting a fresh crop, so it's not exactly coming from a place of honesty and good will.

The attitude is very much, you're a professional, we expect you to act like professionals and deal with it. Lawyers are self-driven workaholics so it works.

If you tried that in 98% of office situations it would be chaos.

this checks out. though for me having a kid was the moment the switch really flipped. little dude seems so much more important than the relatively insignificant shit i deal with day in and day out. if i could not work and just hang with him all the time i would do it a f'n heartbeat.

Realizing work is flame has been very liberating for me. I used to wonder why I could get away with slacking sometimes and not others, and think my supervisors were, with few exceptions, supersmart workaholics. Now that I understand that they're all as mediocre and depressed as me and have basically developed different strategies to fake it with their peers and supervisors, it allows me to be a lot less anxious minute to minute and day to day at work. It's also hilarious to realize that this is how normal people think of work, and only aspie lawyers think they're "rigorous scholars" who earn every penny they make with the force of their intellects.

About 3 weeks into BIGLAW. Been that way ever since.

20 consecutive years of education in preparation for a "real" career, and 3 weeks into it I realized it was all flame and completely unhealthy.

The sooner you realize that there is no such thing as "passion" for 99% of jobs out there, the better. The lower your expectations are on deriving meaning from your job, the better. To make good money but also have time to spend outside work with friends and family is the "passion."
