It was so great back before the stupid colleges made teachers start taking attendance. I'd be sitting in my apartment in a haze, some green rolled up on my "Contemporary Social Issues" textbook and be like "oh fuck was there an exam or something in my comparative politics class"

totally

it's tragic that we were born into this limbo period, when people are beginning to realize that college is a scam, but it's still socially unacceptable NOT to have gone to college.

it's a disaster. we are in an in-between period re: a lot of issues, college is just one of them.

I thought it was cool. Meet people from across the country with different backgrounds, interests, and skills. Push yourself intellectually in different and interesting subjects. Have lots of free time to party, socialize, date, exercise, learn new hobbies etc. The cost is outrageous (especially if you're taking out loans) but if parents are able to foot the bill without too much trouble it's a grand time. When are you going to have that kind of schedule again?

Its an enjoyable way to spend 4 years

but its not marginally useful towards the next 40 years of your life,

its a waste of your material resources, its a waste of your most energetic timeframe, it teaches you terrible life habits

its a vacation, taking a 4 year vacation when you're 18 and have no accumulated resources is dumb

I am from a working class background, went to a working class Catholic High School. I am sure a lot of people didn't learn a lot in college, but I did. Was always "smart" but never intellectually curious.

I didn't approach college as a trade school, which I am sure my parents weren't happy about.

[EDIT] if you mean you don't learn much how to succeed in business, I agree with that.

but relative to what I could have learned had I intentionally accelerated my learning and tried to maximize around learning as much as I could,

instead of maximizing around having a good GPA and still having a lot of free time to screw around

it wasn't actually that much

People that could actually find balance between being lazy and striving when needed (aka actually turning in papers on time) at my UG are mostly doing well, making a lot more than me and having a lot of fun.

Yes, for strivers it sucks. But fuck that shit.

call me a striver if you want (though actually that's pretty laughable)

but its actually a really shitty feedback system

the pace of turning everything in on time tricks you into think you're doing well at life, in reality, you're working at a far slower pace than you need to make just about anything else work in life

Its actually a really shitty habit to get into thinking that that's a good pace to go through life at

I mean b/c i flunked out I ended up having to spend 20K at a out of state flagship for 1 year, but otherwise my UG would've been mad cheap so I'll take this 4 year (ended up being 7 years but w/e) vacation.

THe thing is, the 4 years of nopay sets you up better than nocollege for not only HYP but id say for most top 50 schools if you can do something worthwhile like coding etc.

(Humanities in ivies can get you into finance etc though which is why it was 180)

I don't see my high school graduate self as being ready for the workforce (at least the white-collar workforce). College is a nice and comfortable way to turn people into intellectually curious citizens and decent workers. It's probably not the most efficient way to do it, but I don't see any alternative right now. I think the cost is the bigger issue.

Money grab for boomer admins saddling kids with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for the privilege of learning how evil our country is, but little else in terms of practical knowledge. It was fine when we lived off the spoils of ww2 but now it's an incredible indulgence, and one that's extended on borrowed time as other nations will soon be eating our lunch.

If you don't have a group of lifelong friends that you made in college, that i) make you happy whenever you hear from them/see them, ii) that you could call when you are having a shitty moment in your life and talk to them about it, and iii) who have a positive opinion of you and your character that you seek to maintain (i.e. it would be very embarrassing to talk to them and tell them that you e.g. got fired because you were caught being dishonest/immoral, cheated on your wife and are getting divorced, etc.), then you did college wrong. I didn't make most of my college friends that are this level of friendship until pretty late in the game (basically Junior year), and it transformed college from being pointless and completely focused on trying to fuck girls into being one of the most crucial turning points of my life.
