They hit rock bottom i'd say around 3-4 years ago. Things are looking up now, I have noticed a lot of people are moving back to these areas for the low cost of living and lack of traffic, crime etc. as more people get the ability to work remotely this will increase
Lots of gen xers who are fleeing cities now that their kids are old enough for public school

Some rural towns will be saved by the self driving car when it occurs. But probably only those within a 90 mile drives of a tertiary city. But most will slowly fade away, while nature reclaims the buildings. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
I'm from a small town so I find it sad. But GC waits for no man.
