my lib heart believes that someday, with a lot of progress by all of humanity, everyone might be able to peacefully co-exist. however, that day is not here yet. i think thats something we should work toward as people (being tolerant of those who are different from us), but im fine with sovereign countries maintaining borders and enforcing immigration laws
the problem in the US is that there are a number of people (dreamers) who are here through no fault of their own. realistically it doesnt make sense to deport them or even most of the people who are here already. it would be chaos, rip apart families, etc. but they also shouldnt be able to just blatantly break the law with no penalty either. i would suggest a compromise that consists of the following parts. please note that this is what i think is the solution that would best reasonably address the problem, not necessarily what is ideal:
1- ending birthright citizenship for those who do not have citizen parents
2- allowing the illegals who are here to stay if they - dont have a criminal record - obtain citizenship within a set time, say 3 years - pay a fine and back taxes owed (if they are unable to immediately pay, something could be worked out in terms of payment, etc)
3- creating border wall or in some other way keeping illegal immigrants from being able to come here in the future
4- actually enforcing immigration law going forward after this amnesty
5- enacting new laws with harsh penalties that penalize companies that hire foreign workers after the set time period (3 years or whatever) that people have to obtain citizenship
now im sure people are going to jump down my throat and be like THEYRE FUCKING ILLEGAL! THEY CANT STAY! DEPORT THEM ALL! SHOOT THEM ALL! but reasonably, thats not going to fucking happen. what im suggesting i feel like is a rational, logical compromise to deal with a shitty situation that SHOULD have been dealt with 20 years ago

FWIW, I had a 2340 SAT (1600 on M+V, got fucked on essay), 35 ACT, perfect SAT II's, 12 APs, Eagle Scout, state debate champion, salutatorian, and had taken several college classes while in middle school. I got waitlisted at HYP. |

Harvard's admission rate fell pretty significantly from 1991 to 1995, though, and of course in the spring of 1995 the SAT was recentered, so I'd guess SAT scores were significantly higher by the mid-90s. |

My stats+ECs were good enough for HYP, I think, but it's an odds game (I got in to every non-HYP school I applied to). For unconnected whites and Azns who don't have truly one-of-a-kind accomplishments, there's really no such thing as an auto-admit at this point. That's not the case with other groups. Beckersted totally deserved to be admitted, but he was an AA beneficiary in the sense that he was close to a lock.
It's like a black guy applying to YLS with a 174. An excellent score, but white people with that score do get rejected somewhat regularly. |
