It is a woman and gay man's game now. For all his faults, McCarthy is writing thematically complex books with plots involving genuinely masculine men in life or death struggles. No compromises. No gay characters with MFA's living in Brooklyn. He is among the last of a dying breed.
The dark subject matter and intentionally abstruse writing style of McCarthy is like catnip for male pseudo-intellectual literary types. There is hardly anyone like him writing today and saying Blood Meridian is your favorite novel is a way for a certain type of person to signify intelligence and depth. It is why similar men will go on and on about Thomas Pynchon or David Foster Wallace.
