1) From a bench scientist level, having a good set of hands is really important. And not just so you can aliquot in a 384 well plate. Just like just because you have bought the Babbo cookbook and spent $300 on specialty shit at Eataly, you aren't necessarily going to make anything good, a lot of the disclosures that you see in the literature are not really enabling, so you need to be able to fill the gaps by properly setting your mise, etc. Also, if you are doing imaging, stuff like properly mounting an embryo and the like are things you will either figure out or not.

2) Finding the right mentor. And not just from a personality fit level, though that is important, but I feel like I was discouraged from working with non-tenured faculty b/c "Well what happens if they have to leave before you finish?" One of the people with the most successful graduate careers worked with a new professor straight out of a post-doc in the lab of a Nobel Laureate who had some innovative RNAi screening technology that quickly netted her two 1st author Cell papers.

3) More to that point, the situation you find yourself in can be extremely idiosyncratic. The two 'best' people from my class left relatively early and then floundered for a while in their new labs. One finally started his lab a month ago, and the 2 first author Cell student gave up and went into industry.

4) Self-advocacy is really important. Rigorous skeptic objectivity is usually punished.
