poasting advice: the only flaw in your poasting is that it tends to just scratch the surface. no elaborate, involved schticks with novel characters - instead, I see a lot of churning language and memes. witty and inventive, sure, but it doesn't plumb the emotional depths. sometimes you've got to really peel back the onion.
the vocaroos are ok, but seem to me too much like something i'd see on old SA. (shmorky or whatever). which was fine and good 15 years ago, but poasting surely has advanced!
life advice: live below your means, stash money, survive, and cop loving tradwife who is cultishly devoted to you and would gladly step in front of federalis bullets to help your master plan. SO SIMPLE! |

poasting could easily breach 175+ if you spent more time trolling xanga, livejournal, etc. for stories of real life weirdos (a la chris chan) and then poasted them here for our derision.
as things stand, you're a good poaster, good heart, and you stand out (have a BRAND) but you're not fully capitalizing. if i were a VC firm i'd bid on you, merge you with another poaster, generate a bunch of 180 content, fire all the employees and then liquidate the assets for a cool $22.78mm.

I wasn't very good at in though, and now I'm a shithead lawyer. In the middle of law school I figured that there are three year long clinical cytogenetics training fellowships for PhDs who don't want to do basic research, and I suspect I should have done that instead. |

1) From a bench scientist level, having a good set of hands is really important. And not just so you can aliquot in a 384 well plate. Just like just because you have bought the Babbo cookbook and spent $300 on specialty shit at Eataly, you aren't necessarily going to make anything good, a lot of the disclosures that you see in the literature are not really enabling, so you need to be able to fill the gaps by properly setting your mise, etc. Also, if you are doing imaging, stuff like properly mounting an embryo and the like are things you will either figure out or not.
2) Finding the right mentor. And not just from a personality fit level, though that is important, but I feel like I was discouraged from working with non-tenured faculty b/c "Well what happens if they have to leave before you finish?" One of the people with the most successful graduate careers worked with a new professor straight out of a post-doc in the lab of a Nobel Laureate who had some innovative RNAi screening technology that quickly netted her two 1st author Cell papers.
3) More to that point, the situation you find yourself in can be extremely idiosyncratic. The two 'best' people from my class left relatively early and then floundered for a while in their new labs. One finally started his lab a month ago, and the 2 first author Cell student gave up and went into industry.
4) Self-advocacy is really important. Rigorous skeptic objectivity is usually punished.
