Search will be running on another server so it doesn't bog down the main site, and it will be optimized rather than running off the live database. It's a little bit more of an undertaking because I'm developing an API in order to make it all work together.

Obviously one primary goal is to make it faster, but I think search should be more powerful, too. I was hoping you could offer me suggestions as to what enhanced capabilities you would like in the search, as well as what capabilities you would NOT like.

For example, there's no way I'm going to allow searching by username because I think it would be a stalker's dream. But I think being able to search post content could be useful, but I'm still weighing the pros and cons. What do you think?

it works now if you manually put &p=1 &p=2 etc. at the end of the URL.

so let's say you search for "fuck my ass." the first page of results is:

http://www.xoxohth.com/main.php?forum_id=2&hid=&qu=fuck+my+ass

if you click on ">>(2)>>" at the bottom, it truncates everything after "fuck," which isn't what you want.

BUT, if you take the search URL and add &p=1, we get the actual second page of results:

http://www.xoxohth.com/main.php?forum_id=2&hid=&qu=fuck+my+ass&p=1

if you click on ">>(3)>>" then, once again, it truncates, so just swap the "1" at the end of that URL for "2" and so on.

That's doable, but I'm going to be honest, two things about that concern me. One, someone just going through and wiping all their posts. It could potentially fuck over thousands of threads. Two, bumping sprees of one's own threads. Two is less of a concern, but I could see it happening more often than it does now.

I had to split the bort database in the past because of shitty database queries that I rewrote later on. There is no conflict between the old data and the new, so I can do this, I'm just going to have to take the site offline for a few hours one day to do it.

I have taken a grad-level course on information retrieval and would be more than happy to implement full text search.

If you're reluctant to do that, I still think that information retrieval techniques would be useful in making title searches more efficient, less sluggish, and more dynamic (by allowing full boolean search, for example, or even tolerant retrieval).

Okay, that's what I thought.

The best thing you could do to help right now is work on the html / css templates. Plugging it into the code isn't an option yet because the code is being rewritten. Are you interested?

Allow sorting of thread results by descending post count and/or set a cutoff (e.g., show only threads with at least five poasts). A major problem in searching now is that it's hard to find good threads because common terms have a bunch of Benzo 1-poast wastelands (trump, poll, nfl, etc.)

Searching contents would be nice in an advanced search, but retain the current title search option.

I love being able to search for part of a word currently.

The only things that have really bothered me about the current search are the lack of support for punctuation and some problems with multiple word strings

Whatever you do, data security and integrity (inclusive of absolute protection of anonymity) should be your number one priority. Don't let anyone who "volunteers" to help get access to anything either directly (personal data) or indirectly (opportunity to create a means of breach down the road); don't let the search overhaul create an opening (e.g., an externally hosted platform) that could compromise the site. Thanl

Just allow full search, username and all. Would be nice to have boolean operators, proximity search, and fields including username, poast title, date - all of which you can enter as a string in a boolean search.

I like this.

Q: if allowing search by username, would you search by all monikers that poaster has assigned, or just the one used when the poast was originally written?

I am very concerned about my privacy and don't want psychos going through my post history to compile a biography to try and dox me.

Please do not give users the option of searching posts or threads via username.

If it is possible, give posters the option in account settings to scramble their username in posts older than a certain date, so, for example, if I posted in a thread >30 days old, and someone found that thread, all they would see is a random hashtag or [redacted] where you would normally see my screenname. I don't think this would overly detract from the quality of an old thread, but would give posters a lot of protection.

It would give me, and probably others, peace of mind if this was implemented.

I kind of agree with this (the first part, not the account scramble thing), which is why I suggested a feature to search only for threads created by the account to which you are logged in when the search is performed.

Posters become obsessed with other posters. I think this will have a chilling effect on the nature of our interactions here since everyone will know they could be held accountable for every stupid post they make. And also, it may shit up the board with spam (i.e. people will bump threads when arguing with another poster to show inconsistent statements or something).

I'm also concerned about your privacy, BELIEVE ME

That feature could be done if posts were still labeled with a random, per-thread username hash a la 4chan

Doing that could kind of detract from some of the archival value of threads, but I do think it's a valid idea to consider.

A little bit of both. Sometimes adopting big frameworks like Laravel doesn't suit my needs, so I've developed my own shitty framework. But for the xo rewrite, I'm not using any framework because I want it to be speed optimized.

This application isn't terribly complex, but it needs to be fast. If you look into speed tests for competing frameworks, there is a measurable difference between some vs. others, so going minimal is smart if load times are important. I think with this application they're especially important. Most of the load is from the database, anyway, but I've optimized queries and indexed it alright.

Also, I don't want to spend more money on server resources than I have to, since this isn't exactly VC-backed.

Generally, yes, it's true, don't reinvent the wheel, but custom wheels are kind of nice? Sometimes?

Include an "advanced search" button that takes you to a different page.

On this page, you can search by username, thread title, and thread content, with search date parameters. So for example, you type "AssFaggot" into the username box and type "+nigger -re:" (if you only wanted replies instead of OPs) with date "newer than six months." Then you can really "nail down" the poasts you're trying to find.

searching titles should not take that long on a modern rds. the amount of xo posts is nothing compared to what they are supposed to handle, and hundreds of active users is nothing. it's not like you have hundreds of search requests per second.

if you're looking to add search to actual content then it's different, but given that it's an extremely common problem there are bound to be existing solutions which are more efficient (in speed and ease of implementation) than rolling your own. if you just want to make regular title search faster or enable fancier title searches the first thing you should look at is optimizing the db schema and queries before implementing additional functionality

what is your performance for querying as-is, and the size of the db?

I'm pretty happy with the performance of the database and the indexes I've designed. It's about 30 GB. LIKE Text searches don't exactly blaze in MySQL though, and that's all search is right now.

I never built a table of individual words from each thread title, and even then, I wouldn't want to eliminate the ability to search for exact character strings (rather than just words). So I would have to add many entries for every thread created, and then I'd just index them alphabetically. Like potentially 50+ entries per thread. I'd rather be doing all that work on another box.

I plan to use something like Elasticsearch, rather than reinvent the wheel.

depending on how much you want to setup, a fulltext index is fine if you just want basic boolean stuff, and is preferable in general for searching titles in terms of speed vs LIKE anyway. you could sacrifice the ability to search *any* substring (specifically searching in the middle of words, since indexes operate from the beginning) for a much faster search, and i'm sure there are plenty of examples out there where you can just pick the fulltext search style you like and plug it in

You can use k-grams to make exact substrings searchable, not just words. I have done this before.

ElasticSearch is an option, but in my opinion, "reinventing the wheel" here is not a lot of work and would be preferable.

You're current search doesn't allow for punctuation like apostrophes or periods which are critical in thread titles so lots of great work is unbumpable.

Combine this with the fact that your search can't handle a space and it's absolutely devastating. Do you know what happens if you search a phrase with a space? The second page of results drops the second word and only saerches for the first.

Disaster!

Add a column to the accounts table, azn yes/no. Let us filter normal views by that. Sure, we'd miss SAD and ragnus ... but nearly all of the pumos would be gone.
