Funniest, most brilliant and rewatchable movie ever made. Literally every line in the movie is quotable there is even a thread on XO of it. I could have that movie on loop 24/7 and never tire of it.
2.) Glengarry Glen Ross:
The most raw and masculine film ever made. Dialogue is comparable in quotes to above. The absolute Dream Team of actors all peaking at the same time. Scary good screenplay, sharp and cohesive plot, subtly hilarious.
3.) Crimes and Misdemeanors (Woody Allen):
Though I have this at 3 I think this is the greatest film on the list and the pound for pound best film ever made. It encompasses everything in life, comedy, tragedy, religion, philosophy, music, sex, relationships. If I had to pick a film to send into outer space to explain this planet I would punt this into orbit without a second thought. Slept in at the time, it ages well, the acting is incomparable and Woody Allen reached his seminal point as a Director here. There are scenes so painful to watch juxtaposed with scenes so funny I wish I could forget them after to rewatch over and over. This is perfection, but it's so good i almost want to preserve it in my mind.
4.) Godfather Part 2:
This is pure art. I can't rewatch it as much as the other films on here because of the intensity and toll it takes in having to watch it but there are scenes I will tear up watching from the sheer cinematic beauty of it (assassination during the parade scene with lightbulb dimming). This is more a painting than a movie to me. A masterclass in score, acting, cohesion.
5a.) Rosemary's Baby:
The most horrifying movie of all time psychologically. Such a shocking premise, ending buildup. Really no other horror movie like it. Doesn't rely on cheap thrills and scares but warps in your mind. Just thinking about it right now creeps the fuck out of me. Spiritually haunting in every way - captures psychosis and paranoia unlike anythign I've seen.
5b.) The Dark Knight:
Endlessly enjoyable. The toll and intensity of filming the movie literally killed Heath Ledger. Resurrected a franchise, was the first domino responsible for so many superhero movies. Will go down as the most realistic superhero film of all time. I don't recall having that much FUN in a theater watching that movie. Never wanted it to end.

i like the lead actress, the music is fun, and i enjoy the fact that it has a bit of action without being completely brainless. it does make you think, but only a little bit and in a way that isnt over the top pretentious. its just a fun movie imo. i think its a really well-made film and i enjoy watching it. i watch it about once a year. |
