I have an Audi at the moment, BMW is probably comparable. It's objectively the "better" car than the Accord, but not sure it's worth the extra expense or higher long-term maintenance. Plus the new Accords and Camrys pack a lot of shit.

Yea man. I need that better handling to overtake people on the highway going 50 MPH! LJL.

Get a $5K Miata and a $30K Accord if you want to actually drive a car hard (e.g., at a fucking track). LJL at your half measure german engineered machine doomed to disappoint you.

Quieter drive my rear end and dont pretend RWD doesnt fuck up the trunk and rear passenger seating for negligibly better turning. You take most turns at 8mph in the city. You wont notice the difference.BMW has been doing horrendously in the reliability department too.

re higher long term maintenance, I wasted a lot more money on my old jetta than my current series 3. just don't do maintenance at the dealership. an old school mechanic specializing in german cars will save you A LOT.

VWs are famous for running up repair bills at BMW levels so this is not surprising at all. This would not be the case with any Japanese car. The only issue with Accords is the Japanese all use softer paints because of some weird Japanese environmental reg. Little pebbles and shit scratch up Accords 10x worse than any German car. And the weak paints plague all Japanese cars.

Do the maintenance at the dealer until the free maintenance period runs out and then swop to and independent BMW mechanic.

My old three series ran for years with only two tiny faults.

$40k means you're getting the cheapest 3 series. Don't do that. Either get a 340 or stick to the Accord. Getting something like a 320i that can't get from 0-60 in 7 seconds is just ridiculous. ultimate driving machine my ass.

you can easily get a 330i under $40k but yeah, same engine as the 320i.

with the accord i'd be able to get the 2.0T with a manual tranny.

The new 2.0T Accord is just a sick engine. Avoid the new Camry. It's a piece of shit. Slightly faster 0-60 but the 50-70 time is more than a second off from the last model. It's bigger, heavier and slower and basically drives like a bus. The Accord smokes it. While I'm a huge Mazda fan the 6 is now dated and so avoid the 2018 model. 2019 will likely smoke the Accord though. Just don't buy the Toyota.

I was looking at the manual Accord as well, Stu. Not worth the depreciation hit it's gonna take.

Get a past generation or like a 2015 Mazda 6. Depreciation is the worst aspect of automotive GC flame.

Edit: If you're gonna buy and hold...yolo and get the 2.0T Accord.

That's an argument for why someone should get a 340 instead of an M3. The difference between a 320 and a 340, however, is the difference between a performance car and a car that is slower than many boring sedans (and SUVs, for that matter). At that point, I don't understand why you're getting a BMW at all.

If you don't have that money, then you should get an Accord. Or save up more money. There's no purpose for a 320. It isn't a "splurge."

Not a huge fan of Audis. They seem kind of soft and boring compared with BMWs. Plus everyone knows they are really just VWs in a different skin.

Why do you want a manual? For the fun of it? I think its great you do and if my present car came in manual I would get one because I like driving manuals.

Fun of it. Last two cars before current were stick. There's just no comparison, there's even less of a feeling of engagement with modern automatics now that every other car has a CVT.

My husband has a manual BMW M car. On the rare occasions he lets me drive it its a complete hoot. BMWs have great manual transmissions.

Sadly my BMW Frauwagen while fun to drive and decently fast only comes in auto.

I read nothing good about CVT cars.

If it is only to please XO and you don't care about the performance then what are you doing getting a BMW? They're performance cars. Get your Accord and move on. I will say that no one on this planet is going to be impressed by a BMW 3 series. That's like standard issue for first-year law and MBA grads. So if you're trying to buy status then again, stick to the Accord.

What is behind your insistence that it be a new car? I think holding to that is a mistake. You could buy a certified pre-owned 2014 BMW 320i with 20K-30K miles for $23-25K. Or, go cheap, and get a used Accord or whatever for <$20K.

Invest that extra $7.5K-17.5K that you would have spent on the new car. Then, in 4-5 years, when maintenance costs start to pile up, trade it in and do the same thing.

When you factor in investment earnings on the saved $, maintenance, etc, you'll come out ahead. And the average age of the car you're driving over that span will be similar, anyway.

because i'm not just looking to maximize $. I enjoy newer tech, newer safety features, and newer entertainment options (carplay, android). i enjoy cars, period. i'm content to make that a higher cost area than financially justifiable.

i also like knowing my car's history and the used car market is flooded with former Uber/Lyft vehicles (especially at the Accord level)

Your second reason is CR. Lot of shit used cars, but CPO is usually not bad.

But the first reason is, IMHO, short-sighted. If you're going to hold it for 10 years, you'll have the newest tech for years 1-2 and then never have for a fucking decade. If you go the route I suggest above, you'll get something with most of the new tech in 4 years.

According to the company, California is the most popular market for the RS with 627 of them sold, roughly 18 percent of the total volume. Michigan (256), Texas (244), Florida (230), and Pennsylvania (192) round out the other top five markets for it.

I've driven an rs and it's fucking awesome. It's basically glued to the road, and feels like what the STI should've evolved in to instead of spinning their wheels for basically a decade.

I've never driven an R but from what I've read the RS is better to drive. comparing it to a GTI though the gti/R has a nicer-looking/more logically laid out interior (same general quality/options, but ford can't design an interior for shit), if you care about that

op, you are in socal right? used to drive a 335i and it was a waste since I mostly did local driving. I wouldn't spend $40k on a 328i or whatever they're calling it these days.

Honda Accord at $30k seems steep though, why not just buy a Subaru, which is a good car if you're having a kid. I realized after having a kid that nice cars are total flame since your kid will ruin the interior with sand, food and vomit and you're not going to go for "fun" drives anyway. Just get something practical and safe.

I happen to like the Accord with the better engine. $30k is MSRP so figure that's still a good ballpark after taxes/fees.

How is a Subaru any better if you're having a kid? Do you mean because they have several crossovers? We don't need AWD here for everyday stuff and I don't go off-roading or anything. Also don't want the handling of an SUV or the crappy Subaru interiors. The Accord is said to have a very roomy backseat.

You make a good point about the fucking kid ruining my car tho.

haha we're going the IBR route. I understated my loans in that thread. 20 years to forgiveness is a long time to plan and even under extremely generous income growth scenarios, my total payments over 20 years don't touch what i'd need to pay in 5. also looked into buying a house -- effects of student loans were overstated in that thread.
