The amount that XO believes it costs to live a meaningful life is the biggest flame around here.

How the fuck do we rail against GC and then buy into the belief that it requires 300k/yr to have a family?

Because that's bare minimum what it costs for a decent house, cars, education for kids, and not constantly worrying about.

As someone whose family clears that but in a higher COL area - that isn't actually enough.

Partially depends on where you live, but in D.C., for instance, I know dozens of families who do perfectly fine on lone GS-15 incomes. They have multiple children, seemingly happy lives, and own homes.

Are they going out to eat every night, ubering everywhere, and taking vacations overseas every year? No, they aren’t. But that shit isn’t necessary for a happy and meaningful life.

In a universe where houses cost what they cost and you still need to pay for childcare, education, etc.

Figure a $700k home (a "fixer-upper" - lol) + 100k in renovations.

And, figure anyone can lose their job at anytime because welcome to ITE.

Well, everything is a trade-off, right? It doesn't have to be, but then something else has to give. What is it?

For me, I was always an "I am open to a family but I'm not willing to live a lifestyle I'm unhappy with for it" guy. I'm not the sort of guy that was ever doing all this for kids. I was doing it for a decent lifestyle. Ever since I was little boy in Siberian tundra... wait, no, that wasn't where I was going with this.

Homeschooled kids are all fucking weird. It ignores the fact that socialization is a core goal of schooling.

And while private schools aren't necessary in many cases, you have to live in a place with decent public schools and that costs money.

lots of homeschool kids socialize bro. you don't know what you're talking about. your info is like 30 years out of date, based on some shitlib propaganda about christian fundies that make up a small % of the movement nowadays.

i know somebody that runs an email group for homeschoolers and they're always doing activities and shit. and it's a very non-fundie vibe from what they tell me (like fundies are welcome I guess but there's not many of them, cuz its a pretty lib urban area. most of the parents are libs...)

No, I know non-Christian fundy ones too. They're still weird. Normal kids spend the whole day around other kids. They spend it with their parents. That is obviously going to have an impact. That isn't "shitlib crap" - it is basic common sense.

i know a homeschool group with totally normal kids bc each parent teaches a different class so homeschoolers are around kids all day

but this way they self-select to only be around UMC and UC white kids while giving their kids a WAY better academic education

only drawback is they don't cop dat autoadmit to TTTexas UG bc they can't get in under the top 10% rule

I know you do, but keep in mind that we're in that great donut where we earn enough that the government thinks we're rich but where the special benefits they throw the upper class haven't kicked in at all. In other words, we're the ones that get screwed.

Sure man, no offense taken.

Not necessarily. See https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/27/business/economy/trump-alternative-minimum-tax.html

More than 2% of households making under $200k pay extra due to AMT (including some under $100k) and over 30% of 200-500k households end up fucked. Hilariously, 20.5% of $1m+ households end up screwed.

Pretty fucking easy. It's laughable that you act like because you LIKE nice cars that it's a requirement to have while also being able to raise a family.

That's like $175k after taxes at worst. This is easily affordable while living a top 5% in U.S. lifestyle.

Spend $40,000 year on a mortgage (that's like a $650,000 house).

Spend $20k saving for college.

$15,000 on two nice cars.

That leaves you $100k to spend on other miscellaneous expenses, vacations, savings, and shit for your kids.

WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU STRIVER CUNT

There are at least a dozen cities with more than one office that pay NYC scale for lawyers.

You don't have to live in SF/NYC/LA.

What about Dallas? Denver? Atlanta? Austin? Philly?

Are you living in dorms or something?

- A mortgage isn't what a house costs. There are taxes, repairs, etc. Also, $650k isn't much in a major metro area. There's also shit like furniture.

- you haven't accounted for actual living expenses other than house and car (and $15k/year isn't going to cover total commuting costs for 2 cars)

- you haven't worried about childcare at all, which is incredibly expenses

- forget basics like food, clothes, etc.

Basically, you listed like three big things, said "done" and declared victory.

Did you not see where I said you still have $100k fucking dollars for all that?

Okay, add $20,000 a year for other property expenses including taxes an insurance and maintenance. This is probably high.

LOL at $15,000 a year not covering total car/commuter costs. You don't have to buy a $40,000 car faggot. This goes to my point of this really being about you not being able to afford your striver lifestyle, and not a family per se.

$15,000 more a year in other child care. Pro tip: You don't have to send them to striver camps all summer.

$20,000 more in food and clothes (plenty).

That leaves you $50,000 more dollars for saving or any other upgrades to the above (you could even buy your ridiculous M5 or whatever striver car you NEED and have plenty leftover from this)

Households with combined $150,000 in income are easily able to do this even in big cities. You are just being obtuse.

Agree with these numbers. $700k home, leasing two new BMW 3-series-type cars, with very expensive school for two children, this person still has approximately $100,000 left over for savings, household expenses, food, and the rest.

Lifestyle choices will dictate how much of that $100k goes to personal savings, but there is room to save.

How are the schools in the valley? I see plenty of 1400 sf 3 bedroom homes for $650-700k. Are they nice new houses? No. But that's not reasonable to expect in LA.

Seems like you want to have your cake and eat it too. ELITE big city striver lifestyles don't come with the nice affordable housing you get in the rest of the country.

It's actually pretty easy to do outside of cities like NYC/SF/LA.

Most people people do it, even in ny/sf/la. The only difference is that you're not maximizing own savings for retirements and/or saving for kids' college spending on your income. At $300k, you're likely saving for own retirement but you're not doing $28k/year in each kid's 529 plan. Not exactly end of the world, kids will just have to take out loans to pay for $100k/year In-state CA tuition in 18 years.
