If I'm being brutally honest this is the vid that REALLY got it into my skull. I hear this in my mind when I recite the alphabet:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7K3B9m2kXM

alif - ba - ta - tha - djim - ha - kha

dal - dhal - ra - zay - sim - shim - saad

daad - taa - thaa - a'y'n - gha'yn - fa - qa'f

kaf - lam - mim - nun - waw - ha - lam alif

hamza - ya

Okay, now that we've got the consonants down, what's going to be tougher is figuring out the vowels because they're not really written as part of the word in Arabic.

Watch this over and over again. Notice the pattern. Just keep watching.

I can get about 70 percent of the letters right but my understanding of what I've deciphered is more limited - I usually need to be already familiar with the vocabulary.

A fun thing to do is be driven around by Uber when I'm out shopping, or with some dude I'm hooking up with, and read the signs on shops and restaurants that we pass by.

I could do this. I taught myself to transliterate arabic characters into western alphabet before I went to the Middle East for the first time. Even though I didn't know much Arabic vocab it was fun to to be to read the signs (and prices written in arabic numbers) and see which ones work well in Arabic script - Coca Cola is a good example.

"Subway" in Arabic features the letter "y" which in terminal form looks a lot like S so it makes for interesting signage. We also have a supermarket chain called Lulu and that is very pretty in Arabic.

The initial/medial/terminal letter thing is tough at first too.

Yes having to learn up to four different forms of the same letter was challenging but there's certain patterns groups of letters take and the variants are usually closely related.

Then there are the way they have special characters for common letter combinations, like "la".

PS: yes lulu would look good.

Right, a lot of the forms are easy to discern.

Have you seen Arabic calligraphy? Some amazing calligraphy they have.
