Mostly agreed. Think ALIEN is great but don't consider it horror.

SAW would've been much better in prose. The story idea is good, but the action is all characterological.

The problem is classifying it as "horror." Imagine if it were released today - it would be a "crime thriller" or something

It's a little too jerky; lots of the middle doesn't really work beyond being an engine to get to the next set piece.

Frenzy, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Shadow of a Doubt all better

Interesting. I saw it when I was 15 or 16 and my friend and I simply couldn't stop laughing at it. Not a good vibe for a non-campy horror film.

yeah honestly it would have been a better movie without the twist

i think it scared me so much bc i was stoned but i was legit terrified the entire movie

watch wolf creek then and let me know what you think.

YOU STILL NEED TO WATCH LOST HIGHWAY BTW. :)

hilarious he kept that in but cut the whole subplot re: the weird sex parties. i'm sure there's a callback in EWS or something.

Also LJL at the camera-slip in the opening scene. Amateurish!

True although the book does a better job of that. The horror in the book is Jack can't keep it together. But as King points out, from scene 1 in the film you can tell Jack is nuts

The Shining is a work of art don't get me wrong, but I do prefer the psychological realism, and almost Zola-esque naturalism, of the novel.

I think The Shining (film, Kubrick) may work better if you've been socialized to everyday psychopathy to the extent Jack Nicholson's unworldly mugging doesn't seem entirely out of place in a quotidian setting.
