I called the other people back and explained that I am sorry, it's unprofessional, I know it puts them in a tough spot, blah blah, but that I can't pass up what my current employer is offering me.
They were like, "I can't believe you'd do this to us." I tried to explain more, but they were totally silent, then just said, "OK. Goodbye."
Not even one iota of trying to be professional or even fake "well, this sucks for us, but I understand, goodluck."
Part of me feels like total shit. Not only for hurting them but also now I have an industry enemy.
Part of me feels happy I am not working for people that get so angry and emotional when they really should remember it's fucking at-will employment and shit happens. I can't be the first, or last person, to have a CEO step in and want to keep me. |

But honestly don't feel bad, you're not the first or last person to renege on an offer and they will fuck you in an instant so you should only worry about yourself. Also if they wanted you enough, they would've at least asked what the offer was and considered matching or exceeding it. Fuck them. |
