Biglaw had its perks, but not enough to outweigh its drawbacks. Had a recruiter pitch me a biglaw gig: The longer you stay out of biglaw, the harder it'll be to get back in.

Not sure what Are Reptile does, but compliance plays an important role in our mega corp. I'd take some compliance gig over a documentation negotiator with an atty title. There are over 30 attys in my dept/group, and I'd say only about 10 really practice law.

Any particular point?

At my company, you can probably divide the attorney into the following groups: product attorneys, generalists, and contract negotiators. (I'm excluding higher up managers -- head GCs or regional heads.)

I'm a product attorney. My responsibilities generally consist of helping launch new products, regulatory work, respond to product specific inquiries by third parties or regulators, prepare any contractual documents, handle internal mergers, some corporate secretarial stuff, review compliance materials with compliance, some negotiations, and coordinate work with outside counsel for particular matters. For example, if my business unit wants to launch a product in Europe, I research, analyze and present on the issues and provide guidance.

Generalist attorneys are those that may have a particular field (e.g., lit, IP, or M&A) but support the company world wide. So, if we're doing a merger with a third party, then they'd handle it and involve the product attorneys to discuss regulatory or other restrictions. For example, getting consent from a regulator. If my business unit is going to sign a SaaS agreement with someone, I'd kick it over to IP and review with them.

Contract negotiators simply negotiate the documents assigned to them. I helped prepare the play book for them that let's them know what to say, how to say it, and what concessions can be made (if any). Certain things require approvals, so they collect them. If it requires legal's approval, they can't give it. They go to the product attorney. I'll ask them for info re the deal and approve, reject, modify, or ask for additional info. These can be particularly bad because you're essentially painting with numbers. There isn't much there for ingenuity. The more complex deals get sent to the product attys because we know that it'll be a contentious or difficult negotiation.

From what I hear, they miss the comp sometimes. But not enough to actually leave. There are exceptions though--I've seen in-house lawyers go back to firms (presumably with the expectation they will bring their former employer in as a client). And I knew one guy who lasted 3 months in-house and did not find it rigorous enough (strange case).
